Running LaTeX dvi previewer on MacOS X
...people have given great advice on how to successfully use X11 on
Mac to so we can use the dvi previewer to view latex() output from
Hmisc. Now after a version upgrade of X11 and X11sdk we are getting
lots of crashes. I noticed a Mac dvi previewer with an executable
stored as /Applications/TeX/TeXShop.app/Contents/MacOS/TeXShop
Can we bypass X11 problems and point Hmisc to this executable for dvi
viewing?
Thanks

sync+Rnw+TeXShop, again
Hi All --
I'm not sure this is the natural place for this question, but this list is
the place with the best Sweave-TeXShop-sync discussion so far.
My problem is that sync+Sweave+TeXShop works sometimes and not others, and
it's not consistent. The failure, in which sync from PDF opens the .tex
file instead of the .Rnw file, always comes after a code chunk.
If I start from a simple example (below), sync works perfe...

Sweave, Texshop, and sync with included Rnw file
Hello everyone.
I am in the process of writing a book in Latex with Texshop, on Mac.
This book contains a lot of R code, hence the need to use Sweave.
I was able to compile Rnw files, and to sync back and forth from the pdf to the source Rnw.
My problem now is that the book is divided in Chapters, and every chapter is in its own Rnw file.
I can compile them from the main o...

Setting locale to support UTF-8
In Sweave, if the locale is set to C, non-ASCII characters are not
handled nicely even if I declare the encoding of the file to be "UTF-8".
I'm trying to find a workaround for this, because I'm using Sweave
from within TeXShop. TeXShop runs its typesetting engines in the C
locale, and non-ascii characters are messed up.
Is there a way to declare that I am in a "generic" UTF-8 locale? It is
like the C locale in other respects, but it knows about UTF-8 characters.

Rd.sty error
I had written a vignette and included a
\usepackage{Rd} command to make it possible to include
latex'ed Rd files in the vignette. However, when loading
Rd.sty texShop produces the following error:
l. 180 ...d}[1]{\ifmmode\bm{#1}\else\textbf{#1}\fi}
This is on Max OS X 3.9 and R 2.0.1
Has anyone seen this before and/or is it problematic? I'm not sure whether
the output suffers from this but it does create a problem with R CMD check
because tex produces a w...

Sweave and Textwrangler
Hi,
I am trying to get TextWrangler to work with LaTeX and Sweave. Ideally
I would call a script from TextWrangler that would run Sweave on a
document, then LaTeX (using SyncTeX), and finally
open the corresponding pdf in Skim. Of course I don't always need to
run Sweave and would be looking for the option of LaTeX -> Open. I
found this http://www.xs4all.nl/~msneep/latex/ but it

Error using Rd2dvi on OSX
Hi,
I run R 2.5.1 on Mac OS 10.4.10 and fail to build a package manual.
Below is the transcript. The problem is a "pdflatex: command not found"
error but I think that I have a fully working latex install (installed
with iInstaller) as I use TeXShop with no problem.
Could someone help?

Text file encoding
I'm working with some people using apple laptops. When we share text
files (latex files), I reach in an encoding problem on our CentOS
laptops and desktops. In my favorite editor, "?" is "<8e>", "?" is
"<88>" etc...
Of course, I can change the encoding with iconv:
iconv -f MACINTOSH -t ISO8859-15 file.bib.mac >file.bib
iconv -f

RAqua package installation on Panther
From the RAqua faq just uploaded to CRAN (so it will take until
tomorrow to appear)
Panther notes
After installing Panther (MacOSX 10.3) it turns out that package
installation (either from sources or from binaries) can fail. If you
get an error "like" this (this comes from source package installation)

configure lyx2.0.2 with sweave in windows 32 bit.
I am using R 2.14.1. I am trying to configure Lyx with Sweave. I have read
articles but I found none to be complete and I cannot import sweave
document in lyx . Can anyone please help me with a stepwise procedure how to
configure Lyx with Sweave so that I can run my R-code chunks from LYX ,the
output being a pdf.?
Thanks in advance.

GUI's for teaching
Dear All,
There is no advantage of GUI over CLI, IMO. The real
issue is the answer to the questions: "What should I
do next?" or "What am I allowed to do here?"
A "nice" interface, not necessarily GUI, will offer
friendly answers: "I was expecting you to do _this_"
or "In this situation you are allowed to do _these
things_"
You see, it's all

Sweave-LaTEX question
Hi:
I am working on a publication and I have heard about LaTEX but I haven't actually tried to learn about it until today. I've found a few examples but I can't actually make them work properly. I have a couple of questions:
Does LATEX have to be installed on your computer? How does the xtable package and Sweave work together? How can I make the code below create a table as pdf file?

latex{Hmisc} cannot find xdvi on MAC OS X
Hello.
I am posting this on behalf of a student in my class. I have been
introducing them to R.
I suspect that the problem I need help with is not so much an R
issue, but a MAC config issue, but I don't have enough MAC
experience to know what to do.
Anyway, on to the problem. We are using Frank Harrell's Hmisc
and Design packages. This student also wishes to use the latex
formatting

off-topic question: Latex and R in industries
Latex and R are really cool stuff. I am just wondering how they are
used in industry. But based on my own experience, very rare. Why?
How about the opinion of other listers? Thanks.
