...to the platform. My opinion is that there's a silent majority who don't hate Gnome3, and that it's not half as terrible as people seem to make out. You can start applications, move windows around, and manage files. What do people really want from a DE? Being able to just type winkey-texmaker and have texmaker start up is suddenly a bad thing? gedit broken for offering you fonts that aren't monospace? I think that's a really weak criticism, considering it defaults to monospace. Spatial nautilus behaviour is a gnome 2 horror feature, and okay and cancel swapping order and all...

SOLVED [was Re: latex writer in gnome?]
...compile the source text like the program that I'm looking > > for does. > > Hopefully thanks > Sharon. > -- I am currently using a combination of emacs-auctex and winefish, with the occasional usage of kile. After a bit of experimentation I've found the program, its 'texmaker' from kbs-CentOS-Extra. Thanks everyone for your comments :) Sharon.

Latex editor recommendations
This question is not oriented towards R, but is posted here because I have the impression that there are at least some Latex users among the contributors. The question is: What editors for Latex are to be recommended? I have located one: http://www.latexeditor.org/ What other alternatives are there? I am (for the most part) using Windows XP. Tom

Confused about versions of R and Debian
...PC which runs a version of Xandros which I believe to be a fork of Debian. I have been using R under various versions of Windows for some years but this is my first move into the world of Unix. I have installed Texlive from a CD and I have successfully added a UK-based repository and installed Texmaker. Now I would like to add R. There are dire warnings on the EEE forums about the dangers of using Debian repositories so I would like some more advice before I download things. 1 - If I download from the Debian repository using stable (which is the distribution I have - etch) will I get old ver...

Looking for knitr example for beginner (NO RStudio)
Hi everyone, I am using package knitr, FIRST TIME. I don't have access to RStudio. Read through Yihui's page, didn't find it helpful. Stuck on terms Rnw, GFM (GitHub Flavored Markdown). Never used Sweave, so the reference is not helping. Is there a simple step-by-step example WITHOUT RStudio? My question: What is the procedure? The documentation explains the functions, but does

R-4.0.0 and Texlive 2020 installed on EmmabuntusDE4 (Debian Bullseye)
...xlive 2020 is 3.3 Go when compressed during the transfer and 6.2 Go after decompression on the disk. The download from the Debian repository is also much faster than from the CTAN repository: 15 minutes against 40' with my ADSL line. I completed the installation with Texworks, TexStudio and Texmaker, then commented the sid line in the sources.list file to revert to the standard Bullseye repositories. I then follow Johannes Ranke's instructions to install the R binaries: https://cloud.r-project.org/bin/linux/debian/ Johannes, you should add in the instructions the following line for...

Just need to vent
Sometimes the direction of UI development in gnome really angers me. For example, when selecting a font for the gedit text editor - there is no way to ask it to only show monospace fonts. It's a fricken text editor, that should be the default - meaning you have to do something special to get fonts shown that aren't monospace. Seriously, who is in charge with the UI design in gnome?

avoiding for loops
I have data that looks like this: > df1 group id 1 red A 2 red B 3 red C 4 blue D 5 blue E 6 blue F I want a list of the groups containing vectors with the ids. I am avoiding subset(), as it is only recommended for interactive use. Here's what I have so far: df1 <- data.frame(group=c("red", "red", "red", "blue",
