test for two samples
Hi R-users, My question is more methodological one, rather than technical. I have to samples representing residuals based on two measurements techniques (resid1,resid2; n=69). I need to compare two samples, to reject one technique (the worse one), and to keep the one which gave lower residuals (better one). What to look for? What should I analyse? Means, variance, std. deviations? Based on preliminary EDA: mean_resid1 < mean_resid2 #I woul...

Fade Anything Technique (FAT)
Has anyone used the built in FAT (Fade Anything Technique) that exists in 0.11.1 of Rails? I could not find anything in the documentation so I was wondering if anyone has any code snippets on how they used it? Thanks for your help. John

Seeking pointers to various regression techniques with R?
Hi all, Could you please point me to good materials on various tricks/intuitions/techniques of regression, and hopefully in R? For example, what does lm(y~ x * w - 1) mean vs. lm(y ~ x/w -1 ) vs. lm (y ~ x:w-1), etc... I just found that even simple linear regression is not that simple and there are a lot of tricks/techniques in using them... Hopefully I can find good materials on thes...

Newer Matrix Factorization Techniques
Hi, I am not sure if this should go to r-help or r-dev list. I have looked at some archives of R libraries but cannot seem to see a project that focuses on the new matrix factorization techniques that are showing up in the literature. I have made a list of them: https://sites.google.com/site/igorcarron2/matrixfactorizations they include Robust PCA, Dictionnary Learning, Sparse PCA and are mostly implemented in Matlab. What is most interesting is that even though they share the same names...

minimize download bandwidth techniques
I know of a few techniques for minimizing server bandwidth when bittorent is not an option. 1) If you have the beta isos, you can rename them as centos 5 isos and then rsync from a mirror that allows rsync (such as kernel.org). Then only changes from beta to centos 5 plus some overhead is downloaded. I suppose you could...

metafor- interpretation of moderators test for raw proportions
Hello metafor users, I'm using metafor to perform a single-effect summary estimate of the raw proportion of patients experiencing a post-operative complication, and I'm interested in seeing if this proportion differs between the three most commonly used surgical techniques. The software is working as expected, but I would like to double check on the interpretation of my mixed-effect model summary. The levels of my moderator variable surgery.type are LateralWedge, Dome, and Complex, which I've dummy coded like this: dat$LateralWedge<-ifelse(dat$Technique...

Help with Clustering Techniques in R
...th success or failure or, if there's any relationship at all between the measures and the outcomes (success or failure). I don't have (as yet) any experience using clustering techniqes (in R or elsewhere) but thought that they might be applied in this situation. In general, are clustering techniques useful in this situation? Is any techniques better than another? And more specifically, can I use R to determine clustering characterics of the 12 measures and then, for each cluster, have R output whether the cluster is more associated with success or failure? Any help appreciated, Bill Vedder...

looking for Variable selections models, techniques, methods
...indow, for example 20 time steps wide (everty step is equal to 50 fs). But this meaningless (on my view) because it would dig out a transient relationship. Whereas what we need is a relationship that lasts consistently all over the configurational transformation period. I made some progress with techniques for Dimensionality Reduction. The problem is that such techniques do not select variables. For instance, if I can reduce the dimensionality, say from 100 to 8, still I am not likely to be able to find the 8 independent variables which carry most of the information. Very likely the basis of the...

[LLVMdev] LLVM Expansions
...nd operating characteristics (especially physical implementation) it is not possible to coherently optimize complex code sequences, especially with wide varieties of influences on abstract operation. Obviously, all characteristics of physical system implmentation should be included in the standard techniques. More importantly, given most of that model data (result values) is fairly finite and known variable data ranges for most target implementations, one must propogate these analytics to higher models. There is no difference between the physics simulation techniques used to confirm the physical chi...

clustering technique using lsi
I am still trying to find some faster clustering technique for search result. One technique which strike to me is, using the Latent Semantic Indexing for Clustering the search result can give better results. In which we don't even need to iterate over different values of 'k'(in K-means algorithm) to cluster documents rather we can cluster whole...

Outlier removal techniques
Hello, I need to analyse a data matrix with dimensions of 30x100. Before analysing the data there is, however, a need to remove outliers from the data. I read quite a lot about outlier removal already and I think the most common technique for that seems to be Principal Component Analysis (PCA). However, I think that these technqiue is quite subjective. When is an outlier an outlier? I uploaded an example PCA plot here: http://s14.postimage.org/oknyya1ld/pca.png Should we treat the green and red dots as outliers already or only th...

New Technique: Subsets of has_many Associations
...akes the database queries quite a bit more efficient. However, when you put conditions on an association like that, it is enforced globally and suddenly things like :dependent => :delete_all will only delete events from the future as well. I welcome feedback and potential gotchas in using this technique. I''m also especially interested in documentation on prior uses of this technique. I googled pretty extensively, but its hard to separate this particular use from a lot of other issues people are talking about. I have written a complete writeup on the thought process at: http://darwinwe...
