[OT] "normal" (as in "Guassian")
...Peirce, Francis Galton and Wilhelm Lexis around 1875." So be it, if that was the case -- but I would like to know why they chose the name "normal": what did they intend to convey? As background: I'm reflecting a bit on the usage in statistics of "everyday language" as techincal terms, as in "significantly different". This, for instance, is likely to be misunderstood by the general publidc when they encounter statements in the media. Likewise, "normally distributed" would probably be interpreted as "distributed in the way one would normally expe...

HELPWANTED keyword in bugs.r-project.org
.../bugs.r-project.org/bugzilla/buglist.cgi?keywords=HELPWANTED This URL shows both open and resolved HELPWANTED issues. At the moment only a handful of issues have been tagged, but there will be more over time. One of these may be a good place to start if you are looking for ways to contribute. The techincal level varies; some might be resolved with a small amount of R code; others might need more extensive changes at the C level. Best, luke -- Luke Tierney Ralph E. [LLVMdev] RFC: AVX Feature Specification
...Opinions on whether AVX should be a separate flag or an SSELevel are welcome. Perhaps we need to retink the whole SSELevel scheme now that AMD and Intel are diverging. My prediction is that AMD will dump SSE5 and go with AVX eventually, similarly to what happened with 3dNow. AVX is simply far techincally superior. -Dave

problem with nth patch, counter parameter...I think
...sing ''nth'' to balance packets between different public networks (over the tunnels). I need to access some networks over two tunnels, and some network over three tunnels. I cant get routing working correctly when combinations of two and three tunnels are involved. *now for the more techincal explanation* Tunnel Server 1 (kernel 2.4.28, iptables 1.2.11 with nth and route) Network A is delivered over three tunnels to Tunnel Client A (works fine) Network B is delivered over three tunnels to Tunnel Client B (works fine) Tunnel Server 2 (kernel 2.6.11, iptables 1.3.1 with nth and route)...

[RFC] per-device metadata
Hi, Currently libvirt supports metadata in the domain XML. This is very convenient for data related to the VM, but it is a little awkward for devices. Let's pretend I want to have extradata (say, a specific port for a virtual switch) related to a device (say, a NIC). Nowadays I can store that data in the metadata section, but I need some kind of mapping to correlate this piece of information

For techincal discussions on design it's better to post to the development list. On Mon, Feb 27, 2017 at 16:41:28 +0100, Francesco Romani wrote: > Hi, Hi, > > > Currently libvirt supports metadata in the domain XML. This is very > convenient for data related to the VM, but it is a littl...

Question about Icecast
Please help... I subscribe to a streaming audio (internet radio) service called "Coast to Coast AM". Thier server will not allow it's stream to be downloaded and saved for later listening. Will IceCast perform such a function? If so, how do I go about it? Thanks for your help... Ray Kinman raykinman1@yahoo.com <p>Your Obedient Servant,<vbr><vbr>Ray

Samba, AD Server, possibilities?
...ctory, and I'm not sure what other aspects are in there. The former two can already be provided by Linux, but I don't know about the additional stuff... Anybody care to help educate me a little more on the subject? Or at least direct me to relevant docs that explore ActiveDirectory's techincal aspects with some depth? Thus, the question is not only can it be done, but also will it be done eventually, and what functionality is required to achieve it? Best Diego

I think it's reasonable to use separate flags for the AVX features. If there's ever any code that needs to test whether the target has both AVX and a particular SSE level at the same time, the code will just have to check both conditions. Offhand, I'd say SSE4a and SSE5...

Re: Does Libvirt's json parser support single quoted string in qmp json string?
Hi Peter Krempa, Thanks for your quick response, yes, I know since libvirt 5.8, the -blockdev is used for disk by default. However we have to maintain the old releases for the production environment for a while, so I still need use the old way to create the disk. >"base" argument must be a string. this means you need double quotes in >JSON ("). Booting firmware harddisk image with memdisk fails
Hi, I once again have a problem with memdisk failing to boot a harddisk image to update my Thinkpad X200s firmware. I extracted the harddisk image from the eltorito type 4 ISO using the isobar tool. Then I added memdisk using this image as initrd to my grub, rebooted and it boots into PC DOS and then freezes (ctrl-alt-del still works to reboot the system). Inside Qemu however it works fine

Passing function to tapply as a string
Hi, Was wondering if it is possible to pass function name as a parameter, smth along this line param.to.pass<-c(1,'max','h') dd<-function(dfd, param=param.to.pass,...){ ttime.int <- format(ttime, fmt) data.frame( param[3] = tapply(dfd[,param[1]],ttime.int,param[3]), ...) } I know there is a as.formula expression but not quite sure if there is some

i started on the nt domains for unix project on the basis of paul ashton's enthusiastic and "this can't be too hard" attitude, back in august 97. since then, with the encouragement of a number of people over the last three years, and with the discouragement of others, the nt domains protocols are now pretty well understood. due to that constant discouragement, i no longer find

evidence/timelines that show linux is "more secure"
I''m looking for some evidence, backup up with dates and references, that shows that the Linux community responds to security problems more quickly than other OS vendors, and thus might be considered "more secure". A number of fairly high profile corporations are starting to look for such information as they consider Linux as an alternative solution to other UNIXes. Something
