[Fwd: SVGATextMode 1.8 /tmp race]

To: BUGTRAQ@NETSPACE.ORG
Hello,
savetextmode, a utility that comes with SVGATextMode 1.8, saves the text
mode data in /tmp, in two files with the mode 644:

Linux squake security hole (provides root if squake is installed mode 4755)
...otally certain how to exploit this, and it may not be
exploitable. But I''d bet money that it is exploitable and I figured you''d
like to know before BUGTRAQ. Anyways, now for the explanation.
Zoid moved my vga_init() call, which was in the .c file with the
linux main(), into the svgalib .c file, apparently. While this is more
"clean," (esp. considering my stupd inclusion of vga_init() { } into the
X-specific .c files). The problem is that any program using svgalib
requires to be setuid root. vga_init() is the function that gives up root
access. If you call vga_init()...

FW: graphich bootscreen howto ???
Hello sylvian
Thanks.
I use kernel 2.4.3 so far, and the Linux Progress Patch seems to start at
2.4.13....
What I don't understand is, why the kernel whipes out the VGA-display, as
both Syslinux and
the kernel is setup for serial-console.

OT: Help to do something basic
...ng a pretty basic collection of things.
I'm trying to put together a basic filesystem and kernel for network
booting, here's what I basically need
Kernel 2.6.22
Busybox
Networking (dhcp, nfs client)
Fsck
Lynx
Reiserfstools
Dosfstools
Vim and nano ( emacs is preferred )
And svgalib
And .... A custom dir layout.
All of this needs to be reproducible by me, the instructions are enough
if it works and I can compile on a fedora core 6 box.
I'd like to, in the future add the following:
Static startup screen (for a logo)
Samba
Smbclientutils
Alsa

SuperProbe and others
...suid.
In general, there is absolutely no reason for programs that are
supposed to be run only by root to be suid to root!
If your installation has SuperProbe suid to root, remove the suid
bit from it. There is no need to users to run this program. While you are at
it, seriously consider removing SVGAlib programs from your system
