Lots of Centos 5.2 updates already
I just completed my first 5.2 install. For 'completeness' I 'tested out' yum update. Guess what? For this minimum install, there were 43Mb of updates to download. So I went over to my local repo server and setup a /centos/5.2/updates directory and started the rsync to get all the updates: 155 files taking up 943Mb. Already. Wow! Perhaps something to do with the initial

Back to my Xwindows kernel panic
I have a newly built drive with 5.2 fresh install (that I will be cloning shortly) in my DECtop and it is failing with X the same way the upgrade from 5.1 drive did (not too supprising there). In 5.1 X worked. I could startx from init 3 and get into GNOME. Also VNC into the box and have a GNOME screen. With 5.2, I get a kernel panic. Well I guess it is a kernel panic because once I run

writing a R package
Dear Sir/Madam, I am trying to write a R package and I found what has been said in the "Writing R Extensions" is mostly different from what has been done in the existing packages. For example, in MASS package, there is no *.Rd files nor *.rd files. There is an R-ex directory, which has all the .R files, which should be in the R directory according to the manual. Supprisingly, in the R

Ruby/Rails projects "market" site - anyone?
Hi guys, I was wondering how do you look for clients for your Rails companies? I know there are places like project4hire.com but these are more suitable for individuals I think than companies. I was supprised to find there is no such "project market" for Rails projects out there - anyone interested in developing one? Do you think it might be useful / got interest of both developers and

Advice on: sshd[28182]: PAM pam_set_item: NULL pam handle passed
Hi, Ive got winbind and samba working great (version 2.2.3) on our RH 7.1 box's. But as we have about 200 users on our domain, we want to restrict ssh access on our linux box's. So I created a group on the NT PDC called: Winbind In this group, Ive only put our developers and us, the sy admins. In the /etc/ssh/sshd_config, I entered the line: AllowGroups MMEBS+Winbind. Thus, allowing

Is RODC password replication different from the windows version by design or is it a bug?
...erimental code' the best way to help test Samba's new features is to run git master and give us feedback or at least to run our release candidates. While we hesitate to suggest running unreleased code in production, sadly these are so rarely used in production-like environments that we get supprises like this when releases come out. We do write extensive tests Samba's features, particularly when new features are added or bugs are fixed, but the biggest challenges are in the 'unknown unknowns', areas we didn't know were not tested. This was ofcourse a bit of a supprise for me .. lots of failed writes, bounced messages and very angry customers. Has anybody on this list seen this before (not the angry customers ;-) ? Centos 5, X dies, I cry
I just installed Centos 5 for my notebook (HP compaq nc4010) on a separate drive (than this one that has Centos 4.5). When I first booted after all the setup, X did not start. hmm. Rebooted, and X came up fine. I did a bunch of customizing and upgraded the kernel Rebooted, X did not start. Rebooted X started fine. I checked some things out then tried the Suspend feature. Not

Gluster performance / Dell Idrac enterprise conflict
I would be really supprised if the problem was related to Idrac. The Idrac processor is a stand alone cpu with its own nic and runs independent of the main CPU. That being said it does have visibility into the whole system. try using dmidecode to compare the systems and take a close look at the raid controllers and what size and form of cache they have. Re: Reboots -- Short Answer
From: Prasad Pillarisetti <prasad.pillarisetti at gmail.com> > ***Do you perform downtimes just for the purpose of rebooting the systems? > ***Is there a recommended interval Linux system should be rebooted? Okay, here's my short answer: Regardless of OS, you should _always_ reserve dates/times for preventive maintenance on a regular basis. But I agree with most others, unless
