Win32 syslinux needs to support mount points, disk numbers or volume names in addition to drive letters
...mount points as the drive spec; or alternatively, support disk numbers or volume names. Most Windows built in utilities support mount points (such as format) and it should not be too hard to implement. I tried to get around this by backing up the first sector from a USB key that was formatted as a supper disk (that is, single partition with offset = 0 and no MBR, just like a floppy disk) and with syslinux successfully installed; then applying this boot sector to other USBS drives (also copy the ldlinux.sys to those drives). The drives do not boot. Just a suggestion! If you need further info on thi...

new ssd to play with
...zotac running centos 6): hdparm -t /dev/sda /dev/sda: Timing buffered disk reads: 298 MB in 3.00 seconds = 99.30 MB/sec The Samsung 5400 RPM disk (in the zotac running Centos 6): hdparm -t /dev/sda /dev/sda: Timing buffered disk reads: 196 MB in 3.01 seconds = 65.02 MB/sec I'm not supper impressed at all. Sure the numbers say its "slightly" better but I don't "feel" it. I was expecting like really noticeable change in application load time or something - but not really. Just wondering... Is there something that has to be done to take advantage of the SSD...

Astricon pictures
Hey, I am here at Astricon and about to go down to registration. Is there any interest in pictures if I take my digital camera? I am sure that someone is already doing this. (Probably someone official). I would take pictures of each day and upload them to my website if anyone is interested. Let me know! -- Kristian Kielhofner

[LLVMdev] Can't Bootstrap llvm-gcc4.2 on Ubuntu 11.04 32-bit
I can't bootstrap llvm-gcc4.2 on Ubuntu 11.04 32-bit. It's not a test failure; instead the configure scripts break in all kinds of mysterious yet spectacular ways. I spent a couple days beating my head against those completely indecipherable shell scripts then gave up for now. Is there a buildbot that runs Ubuntu 11.04? If not may I suggest that one be set up? A minimal Ubuntu

[PATCH] RFC: ACPI / OSI: remove workarounds for hybrid graphics laptops
...ly a big huge pain to work with. In the end I have no idea how to even figure out what systems are affected and which not by this, so I have no idea how to even verify we can safely remove this (which just means those are impossible to remove unless we risk breaking systems, which again makes those supper annoying to deal with). Also from the comments it's hard to get what those bits really do. Are they just preventing runtime pm or do the devices are powered down when booting? I am sure it's the former, still... Please, don't do this again. For now, those workaround prevent power sav...

Can't share my secondary HD (Ubuntu to Windows)
...d of having so many external Hard Drives. So, I built this new/old system and installed an old Seagate 500GB hard drive I've just RMAed. I'm able to share all my files with Windows Vista & 7 without any issues at all. I installed Samba and it all worked without any issues at all, it was supper easy, just like I need it. Here is the issue: Once I had the Ubuntu system sharing well I decided to Dismantled another External hard drive add as a secondary hard drive to the system. At first I could not get Ubuntu to share it. It took me a while to get windows to see it but I did it. The issu...

High Performance graphics virtual environment: VGA Passthough or a VDI solution
...GA pass through. Thin client will located the terminal in a different rooms. Now the fun part Xen or oVirt KVM. I preference for KVM the kernel module seem to work better. I have had problem with Xen. Does anyone have suggestion for a small home deployment. This is not practical but I have this supper fast computer I like to use and I want to postpone purchasing a Apple laptop for as long as possible. The skills developed in this project can be indirectly applied at work. Thank you Aaron

install totaly messed up
I have just moved to a new server and transfered all my files over etc and also installed wine using yum, however I had a script on my site that used wine (via exec command) that no longer worked after the transfer to the new server. I tried a few things on the server thinking it was a problem with current setup but got nowhere, I then uninstalled wine via "yum erase wine" and

RFD: create new list and forum 'wine-newbies'
It has been suggested that the wine-users list is now too busy, and needs to be split into two: one for experienced users, and one for beginners. However, this might leave the beginners adrift without any experienced people to help them. So I don't think we should do it unless at least a handful of experienced users are willing to join the new group and lend a hand. I'm willing, but I

Unable to follow basic RoR tutorial (Win32)
I have just set up RoR to find out for myself if this tool is stable enough to actually be used yet. Anyhow, I started by going to the RubyOnRails website and following the instructions to install the platform on my Windows 2000 PC. "Get Ruby on Rails in no time" "We recommend Ruby 1.8.4 for use with Rails." So... I downloaded 1.8.4 and installed: C:\>ruby -v ruby

Should I choose DSL @ 1.5 or a full T1?
I'm looking to expand my bandwidth for my Asterisk PBX. Why should I choose a T1 over DSL for my asterisk server? I found someone offering T1's for $290 a month + Loops or 3 Meg for $561 a month + Loops. Is this a good deal? Thanks Bart -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed...
