Accessing Strongspace from a rails app
Is there any information on how to go about accessing a strongspace
account from a rails app? What are the preferred methods for doing
this?
Are there plugins for RoR that support SFTP transfers and so on?

Differentiating between normal site content and accounts with subdomains
...o access the app using an account, and www.domain.com and
domain.com in order to show normal site content.
I''ve noticed that on Backpack, it seems that when you leave the
information pages and start using the app, such as signing up or
logging in, takes you to 123.backpackit.com. On Strongspace, they
have www.strongspace.com/* go to all the informational pages, as well
as signup. I have, however, noticed that if you try to enter
strongspace.com it redirects to www.strongspace.com. Finally, on
Basecamp, all the actual accounts are on one of their other domains,
such as clientsect...

Uploading to Strongspace via Rails app
Has anyone done this? I''m not sure I understand how to go about doing
it without first going to my app''s server and then over to Strongspace.
I would presume the Net::SFTP Ruby lib would be the most direct way to
accomplish some of this, correct?

Anyone done a "File Browser"? Like a free StrongSpace?
Hey all,
Does anyone know of an existing project that acts as a file broswer for
files/directories on the server. I need to implement something for my
students to be able to access their unix home drives on our server via
the web.
It doesn''t sound that hard to do the actual file listing and accessing
in ruby. Authenticating the users could be tricky (PAM?). It could be
done, but

Output Compression in Mongrel?
I''d like to implement output compression in Mongrel (ala Apache''s
mod_deflate). I have found a Rails plugin that, with minor modification,
works.
Is there even an advantage to moving the output compression from the Rails
app to a Mongrel handler?
Unless, of course, someone knows how to configure mod_proxy_balancer with
mod_deflate...

which webserver to use in production?
Apologies in advance if this ignites a war of comflicting opinions....
I''m a few days away from going live with my first RoR application. It
is completely database centric and each user will have his own queries
so cacheing will not really help.
I have a dedicated linux server being built by my hosting provider and I
need to tell them which webserver to use. The databse is MySQL

Friendly Reminder (OT)
Today, I had a tragic hard drive crash. I hadn''t updated anything to SVN in
two weeks.
I''m posting this here as a reminder to my beloved Rails community.
Everyone, right now..... make a backup of your rails work. Make sure its on
two disks. Many of you already do that automatically, but just make sure its
working.
Two near-release rails plugins were lost in the tragic crash

LiteSpeed
Yo Zed,
Just curious -- what do you think of the LiteSpeed
server? Is it better than Lighty? Does it (gasp!) also
serve Rails apps like Mongrel? I think I read that
LiteSpeed doesn''t have proxying support.
Thanks,
Joe

Supporting ~10K users on ZFS
OK, I know that there''s been some discussion on this before, but I''m not sure that any specific advice came out of it. What would the advice be for supporting a largish number of users (10,000 say) on a system that supports ZFS? We currently use vxfs and assign a user quota, and backups are done via Legato Networker.

Preferred backup s/w
Hi all,
What is the current preferred method for backing up ZFS data pools,
preferably using free ($0.00) software, and assuming that access to
individual files (a la ufsbackup/ufsrestore) is required?
TIA,

Can this be done?
I currently have a 7x1.5tb raidz1.
I want to add "phase 2" which is another 7x1.5tb raidz1
Can I add the second phase to the first phase and basically have two
raid5''s striped (in raid terms?)
Yes, I probably should upgrade the zpool format too. Currently running
snv_104. Also should upgrade to 110.
If that is possible, would anyone happen to have the simple command
lines to
