OT FS : STEC ZeusRAM devices
Sorry to spam the list, but wondering if anyone has any interest : Due to political motivations, my current employer has decided to stop utilizing ZFS based storage systems. This has left us with some Stec ZeusRAM devices that we now have no use for. Purchased brand new from Avnet in August of 2011, put into service in September, used for approx. 1 year. We have 6x disks available - part number Z4RZF3D-8UC. If anyone is interested, please email me off-list. -Matt Breitbach

Burning DVD with files>4GB from console
...y backups (ISO9660/UDF/Joliet), and they mount without problems on my FreeBSD BOX, files are fully readable too. However, burning gigabytes of data via slow (about 3.5MB/s) SMB network is just annoing. Is there *any* way to burn DVDs with files>4GB from FreeBSD console? cheers! -- Bartosz Stec

Comparison between the S-TEC Zeus and the Intel X25-E ??
I''m looking at the newly-orderable (via Sun) STEC Zeus SSDs, and they''re outrageously priced. http://www.stec-inc.com/product/zeusssd.php I just looked at the Intel X25-E series, and they look comparable in performance. At about 20% of the cost. http://www.intel.com/design/flash/nand/extreme/index.htm Can anyone enlighten me as to...

FW: Samba4 and A-record file shares
...12R2. I am able to browse to the hostname (\\test) and the IP (\\192.168.2.121) of the Samba4 server with access. I have downloaded the Remote server tools and am able to manage AD and DNS. All seems to be working except for accessing files shares via A-records. I have created a couple A-records (stec - 192.168.2.121) and (sharetec - 192.168.2.121). I am able to browse to \\stec and \\sharetec, but I am not able to access the folders/files there including the sysvol and netlogon directories. I have googled and cant seem to find anyone with similar posts. Is there any info on A-records and samba4...

can not access samba drive on Redhat ES 4
...can't access the drive. The strange thing is that some users are successful. These users all have valid accounts on windows. In this case user "jrau" is a valid user and "JRAUXP" is the PC name from which he is accessing the samba share. Wbinfo -u displays his username: STEC-INC=jrau But not the computer name, which makes me think that might be the problem. Also we are not using LDAP, just winbind. Here is some my config files and error logs: /var/log/samba/<userlog>: [2009/10/12 07:28:56, 0] lib/util_sock.c:read_data(534) read_data: read failure for 4 byte...

hardlink unlink-before-save?
...lace them with hardlinks. Everything is fine as long as users aren't trying to edit and save some documents which have hardlinks. With samba 3.3 it seems that hardlinks aren't unlinked before file is saved. Is there any way to force samba to unlink file before write? Cheers -- Bartosz Stec

Best way to measure performance of ZIL
Hi all, I currently have a OCZ Vertex 4 SSD as a ZIL device and am well aware of their exaggerated claims of sustained performance. I was thinking about getting a DRAM based ZIL accelerator such as Christopher George''s DDRDive, one of the STEC products, etc. Of course the key question i''m trying to answer is: is the price premium worth it? --- What is the (average/min/max) latency of my current ZIL device? --- How how will improving ZIL latency improve performance of my pool that is used as a NFS share to ESXi hosts which force...

Good SLOG devices?
Hi I''m running OpenSolaris 148 on a few boxes, and newer boxes are getting installed as we speak. What would you suggest for a good SLOG device? It seems some new PCI-E-based ones are hitting the market, but will those require special drivers? Cost is obviously alsoo an issue here.... RAID 0 across SSD and HDD
-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 I''ve been unable to find anything definitive about what happens if I use RAID0 to join an SSD and HDD together with respect to performance (latency, throughput). The future is obvious (hot data tracking, using most appropriate device for the data, data migration). In my specific case I have a 250GB SSD and a 500GB HDD, and about 250GB of

SAS/short stroking vs. SSDs for ZIL
Hi, as I have learned from the discussion about which SSD to use as ZIL drives, I stumbled across this article, that discusses short stroking for increasing IOPs on SAS and SATA drives: http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/short-stroking-hdd,2157.html Now, I am wondering if using a mirror of such 15k SAS drives would be a good-enough fit for a ZIL on a zpool that is mainly used for file

zfs eradication
Hi, I was discussing the common practice of disk eradication used by many firms for security. I was thinking this may be a useful feature of ZFS to have an option to eradicate data as its removed, meaning after the last reference/snapshot is done and a block is freed, then write the eradication patterns back to the removed blocks. By any chance, has this been discussed or considered before?
