Windows User Admin Tool error
I've got a Fedora Core 2 box running Samba smbd version 3.0.7-2.FC2.
I've set it up as a Domain master for a new domain.
I setup a Win2K Server box and had it join the domain.
I made an "administrator" user,
I mapped the groups via:
net groupmap modify ntgroup="Domain Admins" unixgroup=admins
net groupmap modify ntgroup="Domain Users" unixgroup=users

How Is Administrator Treated?
...of things, anyway.
First: I created an Administrator account in Linux, and it wound up (here)
with a UID/GID of 604. That's just an ordinary user ID, so what makes it
special as far as the domain is concerned? Should the Administrator account
have a UID/GID of 0? If I try to run USRMGR.EXE or SRVMGR.EXE I can see
things, but can't change them ("Access is denied").
Second, what about Windows SID's? Administrator should be S-1-5-domain-500;
but if I log on as Administrator at an NT or Win2K workstation and look in
the registry, I can't see that SID in HKEY_USERS. How is th...

...e errors. It just says, that the connection to ldap was successfully established and then throws out the error message (as written).
What prerequisites are there to make this command work? I would really like to use this feature as I would like to administrate the Domain with the NT4 ResKit-Tools srvmgr und usrmgr.
Thank you

Bug report: smbmount 2.0.6 and NT pagefile.sys bug
...I have just installed Samba 2.0.6 and noticed that the "pagefile.sys"
smbmount bug still exists:
When unsing smbmount to mount an NT4 volume, and doing an "ls" on the
mounted directory, I get:
# ls /mnt
ls: pagefile.sys: Permission denied
. IO.SYS SRVMGR.EXE
ffastun.ffa summary.dat
.. KBROWSER SRVMGR.HLP
ffastun.ffl sysback
[etc]
The smbfs code seems to have a problem stat'ing the pagefile.sys file.
When trying an 'ls pagefile.sys', I get the same:
# ls pagefile.sys

Samba3beta3 + PDC + LDAP + UsrMgr.exe prob
Heya all,
So I've finally got a machine on this Samba 3 domain. Yey. Its an XP Pro
box, so I grabbed the UsrMgr.exe and SrvMgr.exe programs from Microsoft,
and hoped to at least use UsrMgr to see lists of users, maybe even as a
full User manager, since I can't find a decent one that does all the samba3
stuff.
Anyway, I'm on the domain, and I run the UsrMgr.exe program and I get an
error message:

Hello,

All users of a company can no longer log in (security = domain) to a

In syslog there are plenty of these:

User Management / Samba 3.0.1 LDAP / USERMGR.EXE problems
Hello,
I'm using Samba 3.0.1 with LDAP backend running as a PDC here. When I
start up usrmgr.exe from Windows NT, it will read all the users (or
computers, for srvmgr.exe) in the domain and report them back correctly.
However, whomever I am logged in as ( including gid 512 users) it will not
let me see details or change anything. In the logs after trying to view a
users details I will get (hand typed from across the room, so forgive the
lack of log lines):

Profile naming and Domain Name
...rks fine. Lets
say I have john.smith as a local user account with the profile of
%SYSTEMROOT%\Documents and Settings\john.smith and then he logs into the
domain which should create the profile folder of john.smith.MARS but
instead it creates john.smith.MIDEARTH.
Also when using usrmgr.exe or srvmgr.exe, it never find MARS without me
having to select the domain. I suspect its looking for MIDEARTH as the
domain but i'm not sure why.
Any ideas?

samba pdc with ldap backend setup problems
Greetings...
I'm struggling trying to set up a samba 3.0.23c PDC with ldap
backend. The server is Fedora 5, OpenLdap version 2.3.19-4.
I've got it so smbd and nmbd start properly and I can use a windows
box and see the domain using srvmgr.exe and usrmgr.exe. I'm then
able to signon from a windows XP computer with the command
net use \\pdcserver\ipc$ /user:root rootpassword
Some things that aren't working right... please excuse the long post
but I thought I'd try to include some relevant files before being
asked, to...

Samba3+Nexus+Srvtools at least strange
...of view the sadest thing is that on 9x
no other application can retrive user and group information from samba3,
like they did with 2.2.x. I was logged in with a root equivalent
(username mapped) account, which is member of the Domain Admins group
(SID ending with -512). Also as a side efect in srvmgr from srvtools I
can view the shares, while in nexus I got an error). At each try I've
got in the logs something like:
[2003/10/09 00:01:32, 1] smbd/ipc.c:api_fd_reply(284)
api_fd_reply: INVALID PIPE HANDLE: 0
Thanks in advance for any suggestion

"Bad lockout attempt" recorded twice
All,
I built and installed 3.0.7. I am trying to
finalize my setup by limiting the user to 3 failed
logon attempts.
I used:
./pdbedit -P "bad lockout attempt" -C 3
This works fine for all users EXCEPT for the user
with a matching Windows user name. In other words,
if my windows user name is 'bender' and my samba
user name is 'bender' the number of Bad logon attempts

WG: Windows vista ultimate samba 3.0.31
I found the solution:
I tried the srvmgr tool from microsoft to get connected to my samba 3
domain (from an XP client).
And this tool told me the same "There is no PDC found for your domain.
You may go on but but your rights may be
Restricted." As I logged on I saw that both my PDC and BDC where BDCs.
I stopped my BDC. Logged on...

USRMGR.EXE doesn't work anymore.
I've upgraded my system at Samba 3.0.20 (SLES 8) bacause of some errors
on winbind and Windows 2003.
Now, usrmgr.exe doesn't work anymore.
It reports: ?procedure number is out of range - Do you want to
administrate another domain??
USRMGR has been working for 3 years; I've made all upgrades on Windows
2000, but the results it's the same.
Any Idea?

Adding users with usrmgr/smbldap-useradd
...o add a user i get an error 'the username could not be found'
(I am assuming this is because there is no working script? YET.)
I know not all of the windows management tools actually work, but as
long as users can be removed/added it really does not matter to me.
I can add machines using srvmgr and that also works fine.
Ideas anyone?
Thanks for the help

Googling around led me to the belief that someone fooled around with
srvmgr.exe from a windows machine and that I should remove
/var/cache/samba/share_info.tdb and restart samba. Which doesn't work.
Now if I take out the "force group = users" everything works as
expected. Except that I cannot write in this share - nobody isn't in the

Nearly everything is fine, expect I'm not able to change the security

Add a preamble to documentation
...tration, ntadmin for NT client administration (such as
a loging with local administrative rights on a workstation).
domadmin should have accounts used only for domain administration

ntadmin should be mapped to "Domain Admins" group (rid=512).
ntadmin should not be found in the "admin users =" clause, which should

Accounts in ntadmin group should not be seen in domadmin group, and reverse.
