Re: Octopuses was Re: Let's call a spade a spade., [was Re: Pluralized Controller Names?]
> I certainly think the time to make any sort of big changes like this > is PRE 1.0 release. We''re currently in a kind of weird place though with that 1.0 release: the Agile Dev book is out in print, sold lots of copies to many eager buyers, and it certainly assumes the pluralization conventions. It''s clearly too late for that to change.

Ace of Spades
I'm trying to install Ace of Spades via Wine however I can't seem to get it to work even following the instructions. I'm using Lubuntu 10.10 and no matter what I do I can't get wine to recognize or do anything with the .msi file (I've tried "wine start"). Anyone have any idea? Thanks!

Symbol Font Baseline, Cairo, Card Symbols
I think I found a bug in the Cairo library, plus weird behavior in both the Cairo and the normal pdf device. The baseline of the spades symbol seems to be off. This is easier to show than it is to explain. The problem does not appear in the normal pdf device, which is why I am guessing this is a Cairo bug. moreover, I cannot figure out why three of the card symbols seem to be transparent, but the fourth is not. this is the cas...

postscript symbols?
dear R wizards: is it possible to use a postscript font symbol as a plot symbol? in particular, I want to use the four postscript symbols for playing cards (club, heart, spade, diamond) as points. In LaTeX, these four are \Pisymbol{psy}{"A7} \Pisymbol{psy}{"A8} \Pisymbol{psy}{"A9} \Pisymbol{psy}{"A10} and what I would love to do is place them, at say, (x=1,y=1), (x=2,y=2), (x=3,y=3) and (x=4,y=4). Help appreciated---or merely a note that this is...

"Low Pain" Unicode Characters in pdf graph?
Dear R-experts---is there a relatively low-pain way to get unicode characters into a plot to a pdf device? pdf(file="cardsymbols.pdf") plot( 0, xlim=c(0,5), ylim=c(0,5), type="n") text(1,1, "♠") text(2,2, "♥") text(3,3, "♦") text(4,4, "♣") dev.off() (these are the characters that I need the most NOW, but this is a more generic question.) sincerely, /iaw ---- Ivo Welch (ivo.welch at gmail.com)

Really Old Rotary Phone
Ok... I am not a telephone guy... I was born after rotary phones, so forgive my ignorance in this matter. I am trying to get a really old rotary phone up and running with an ATA. Why? Who knows... just thought it would be cool. The problem is that it does not have an RJ11 connector, instead it has three wires (green, yellow, red). Does anyone know what that type of connector is called? Or

[RFC] IR-level Region Annotations
...em that certain intrinsic calls have behavior *outside* the set mentioned above then the instruction really does not have "call semantics". `call @llvm.experimental.region_begin()` is really a fundamentally new instruction masquerading as an intrinsic, and it is probably better to call a spade a spade and represent it as a new instruction. [XT] Yes and No. Yes: w.r.t region scope annotation, No: it is more than one new instruction, it is more like a sequence of instructions. Assume we have a "fork" instruction, omp fork and cilk fork/spawn semantics are differently in terms...

We can go ahead and fix all the symptoms by addin...

gambling problem
...: You have been approached by a local casino in order to investigate the performance of one of their slot machines. The slot machine consists of three independently operating reels on which one of six different symbols can appear. The symbols are hearts (H), diamonds (D), spades (S), clubs (C) a joker (J) and a castle (Ca). People bet 1 unit at a time in order to play the game and are paid out according to the arrangement of the three reel symbols. Each reel consists of a number of different tiles. For example, the first reel contains 40 tiles. T...

Problem: "Please use registry key HKEY .."
I was able to run a very simple program (Mike Lawrence's Counting At Bridge) with wine although I got symbols for books rather than Spades, Hearts, etc. It no longer works. Wine brings up a blank window with usual File Book Options Help banner. The only choice for File is exit and, if this is chosen, the window closes and wine reports exited with favorable status. After this exit the following message is on the console used to...

font problem? special characters not appearing...
Hi, when I run this bridge learning program in Wine, it looks like this: [Image: http://www-personal.umich.edu/~jamec/nosym.png ] when it should look like this: [Image: http://www-personal.umich.edu/~jamec/cpts.PNG ]. So, the spade/heart/diamond/club symbols are missing. They are special characters in the font though (not bitmaps), and the symbols show up in http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Contract_bridge so it would seem that the font (Arial, I think) does have the symbols. Does anyone know how I can have the symbols show up?...

How to find frequent sequences.
...ters as {A, B } = > 3 from lines 1,3,5. Pls note that A,C,B must not be considered because C comes in between and line 5 also must not be considered because order of A,B is reversed. In simple words I am looking for "most frequent independent event sequent" for any length. I tried SPADE but it does not work for me because there event sequences are not independent. Pls let me know which R algo/package I can use ? Rgds, Vineet [[alternative HTML version deleted]]

My Back-UPS RS 1000 went haywire, any ideas?
Is the battery old? PbAc ones usually last for 2-3 years and then degrade. Should be a field-replaceable part. Some 20 years ago I had an APC BackUPS become a glorified power strip every few years, so when the wall power disappeared - load went down immediately. It was also beeping about battery replacement (but in the closet, was not often noticed quickly). This is also a way for you to check if
