Speex: Open-source, patent-free speech coding
Hi, We would like to announce the first release of the Speex project. Speex (http://speex.sourceforge.net) is an open-source (LGPL), patent-free compression format allowing an alternative to expensive proprietary codecs. Unlike Ogg Vorbis which compresses general audio, Speex is designed especially for speech. For that reason, Speex is meant to be a complement to Vorbis. Since it is specialized

vorbis tag for general music type?
Hi, I am wondering if vorbis has a standard tag for general music type. I don't mean pop, jazz, etc., but something more in line with describing the mood of the mucic. I am thinking of games which have a soundtrack in vorbis format which could use the user's own repository of .ogg files during gameplay, and use the tag to choose appropriate music for that part of the game. For example, during action sequences, songs would be selected from oggs with the tag set to 'ACTION", and during intermis...

Observations about the floating point data in vorbisfile
...you can get values outside [-1..1] when the stream is encoded at lower quality, but with higher quality, the values trim down to inside [-1..1]. Looking at the plot from -q10, the data from ov_read_float seems clipped. I've made some plots of encoding the start of Rammsteins Feuer from the xXx soundtrack (it's a pretty loud soundtrack, but max is still max.. ). http://www.ing.umu.se/~stric/tmp/vorbis/ These are plots of data read with ov_read_file, printf()'d and fed into gnuplot. The x axis is sample number, counting from sample 900k (left,right,left,right,...) Looking at ov_read(), it cl...

Oggenc producing a different file every time
...oblem for us: whenever I run our complete build process and produce a patch for Awesomenauts (which happens almost every week), all audio files are different, and thus all our Steam users will have to download 120mb of music that has not actually changed. (We also regularly make real changes to the soundtrack in patches, so I want to keep a complete rebuild of the soundtrack in our build process to avoid accidentally missing things when building.) I thought oggenc.exe might add the current date if I don't set one myself, so I tried setting the date through "-d 1-1-2012", but that did not...

oggenc crashes on WAV input (with q > 4.99)
Hi all, I've got a strange problem. I was just encoding a new CD I bought a couple of days ago (Muse - Hullabaloo Soundtrack) when I ran into a strange bug. After ripping track 8, CD 1 with cdparanoia under OpenBSD/alpha, I wanted to encode it with oggenc (latest version from the OpenBSD-current ports tree, (`oggenc -v` says 'OggEnc v1.0 (libvorbis 1.0)')). Here's the output : $ oggenc -q 8 track08.cdda.wa...

Merging Ogg streams whilst updating the Skeleton?

Does Ogg Vorbis support 5.1 surround?
Hello everyone! Please bear with me, I am a complete audio-newbie, and I apologise if I am asking a question that I should know. As most of you all know, DVD's have 5.1 audio, and I want to preserve that in my voribs files. So, to ask the question : Does it support Surround sound? Thank you very much!

Vorbis-/Speex-Audio for Movie-Archiving
Hi everyone, I have been using vorbis for ages as audio codec for archiving movies and I have always been happy with it, but now I have been thinking about two things: I) Multi-channel Up until now I mostly encoded to stereo; now I am thinking of encoding more movies to 4.0 or 5.1. I heard that vorbis does not optimize for channels > 2, i.e. that 6 channels is just stereo*3. AAC is

[Flac-users] Quicktime plug-in?
...I know of for the mac that handles ogg streams. http://www.whamb.com/?heading=aboutus&lang=en Flac is really cool... I imagine it would be popular with pro-audio types. If EMagic's Logic and their sampler (EXS24) supported it, or Apple's tools like Final Cut Pro, DVD Studio Pro and Soundtrack worked with the format, it would really catch on.

Windows Media under Wine?
...ware (and without paying a cent :P). But there are still a few problems. It's obvious that there isn't software without bugs. For example, i want to run X3:Reunion (Steam-Installation). It needs at least an installed WMP9 to work properly. More precisely, it uses WMV movies and WMA sounds/soundtracks. Now, I installed WMP9 properly using the HowTo in the AppDB (http://appdb.winehq.org/appview.php?iVersionId=1449) but X3 still won't play those WMV's/WMA's. My question is now: Is it possible to implement Windows Media into Wine directly, without installing WMP? And, is there a worka...

tough file
Here's a tough file to encode well at 128 kbit/s average: https://www.idrive.com/miyaguch/files/Shared/?curr-node=8821135668693434409 "duel.wav" It is the first few seconds from "Duel of the Fates" off of the Star Wars I soundtrack. Vorbis beta 4 at 128 produces artifacts that sound like some tones are beating with others. I identified the Vorbis encode 16 of 16 times in an ABX test. I don't think it has anything to do with pre-echo: it's just a mass of people in a chorus. Fraunhofer's FastEnc at 128 does...

6 channel encoding
It appears that either Vorbis was never intended to support more than 2 channels or the algorithm doesn't work for low sound levels. In trying to encode Beauty and the Beast and Starwars II using 6 channels, the Vorbis encoder produced noise in all the scenes were audio dropped below -25 dB. Unfortunately since most dialog is below -25 dB, the Vorbis encodings are unintelligable for most
