Samba WINS issues over VPN
.... NBlookup fails over VPN.
Microsoft provides a tool called "nblookup" for doing NetBios name
lookups by querying a name server. You can optionally specify the
WINS server if the client is not configured to use one, or it you want
to query a different WINS server.
e.g nblookup SOMEMACHINE
nblookup -s IP_OF_WINS_SERVER SOMEMACHINE
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/830578
If the XP laptop is connected directly to the corporate LAN, nblookup
works fine. If the XP laptop is connected via VPN, then nblookup
fails, even if I specify the wins server IP address. I tried...

Samba conf. problem - NetBIOS problem?
...s grayed out, but it IS checked.
MS Client and File/Print sharing were still installed, and both were bound to TCP/IP, which was bound to the NIC.
However, once I removed NetBEUI and rebooted, I could no longer see any computers under Network Neighborhood. When I tried to do a "NET USE * \\somemachine\someshare" in DOS, it gave me this error: "You must log on before performing this operation."
Now the Win95 login box DOES still pop up when I boot the computer, and I'm still using "Client For MS Networks" as my Primary Network Logon. Yet my local file/print sharing...

Windows user unable to change password over VPN with samba 3.6.20
I realize this is not a strictly a samba "problem" but I am hoping that
there is a samba solution.
I have a samba 3.6.20 PDC. I am running WINS. We use an IPSec
client VPN to allow users with Windows 7 laptops to connect to the
office remotely. The windows 7 laptops are joined to the Samba
domain. Password expiration policies are enforced. When you

Boot diskette for install CD
(New to CentOS and just joined the list.)
Is there a boot diskette image for the install CD? I want to install
CentOS in a classroom that does not have CD boot enabled. I couldn''t
find one on the install CD, although it did have a USB flash drive boot
image. I''m pretty sure that the machines in the classroom are too old to
be able to boot from USB flash drives. (I will check on

Browsing via dial-in

only starts up about 20 seconds or so after
logon - before that I get "unable to browse
network" errors. I've had configurations that
worked, and then I reboot and they don't work
again. But mounting shares with Tools/Map
\\somemachine\someshare always works, as does
IP socket stuff. PDC is an NT 4.0 machine, dial-in is
RH 5.0.
Things I've tried in smb.conf include:
WINS server & proxy, WINS client & proxy,
/etc/lmhosts file, domain logons, DNS proxy.
The dialin server is never Master browser,
never domain controlle...

smbclient seems dead
Hi everyone,
First of all: I am not a member of this list, so any message you send
to the list(regarding this subject), please send them to me too.
When I do
smbclient //somemachine/someshare -U someusername
and then enter the correct password (Windows), then I get a smbclient
prompt. If then do ls, a directory listing is given. So far,
everything is ok. Now, I cd two directories down the tree, and then do
ls in that directory. In this state all smbclient gives me is a carrot...
