factor names
Dear all I have a factor variable which holds values like "Engineer", "Doctor", "Teacher" etc. I would like to collapse those categories so that Teachers and Sociologists form one category named "Teach & Soc" etc. However, I do not know how I can do it. Recoding does not seem to work. Thank you Dr. Iasonas Lamprianou Assistant Professor (Educational Research and Evaluation) Department of Education Sciences European University-Cyprus P.O. Box...

Multilevel model with dichotomous dependent variable
...ld I know about? If so, what would be the costs and benefits of the following courses of action: 1.) Use nlme, violating the assumption of continuous outcomes, simply assigning 0 and 1 as the outcome values. (A crude option, but one that has the distinct advantage of increased comprehensibility to sociologists, the research's target audience.) 2.) Use glmmGibbs, which introduces some new assumptions and requirements of the data, but is perhaps the closest to a "correct" approach 3.) Find a PQL implementation and learn enough about the technique to use it Any comments or advice will be m...

...version of the WxRuby project I''ve been working on. Firstly, I wanted to say thanks to everyone on this list who''s helped at various points over the past year - every time I ran into a problem someone jumped in with advice. A very brief explanation of the app - I''m a sociologist/anthropologist by trade, and the app is intended for use in social research projects where you have a body of text documents to analyse, for example transcripts of interviews. The app helps in developing an analysis by letting you mark up sections of text in different documents as relating to...

HAC corrected standard errors
Hi, I have a simple linear regression for which I want to obtain HAC corrected standard errors, since I have significant serial/auto correlation in my residuals, and also potential heteroskedasticity. Would anyone be able to direct me to the function that implements this in R? It's a basic question and I'm sure I'm missing something obvious here. I looked up this post:

Multilevel modeling using R
Dear All, I use R to conduct multilevel modeling. However, I have a problem about the interpretation of random effect. Unlike the variables in fixed effects, the variables in random effects have not shown the p-value, so I don't know whether they are significant or not? I want to obtain this figure to make the decision. Thanks a lot! Below is the syntax and output of my program:

Simple rep() question duplicating times and dates.
I want to create a data.frame of time and date for a year. I started with the idea of simply producing two vectors (time and date) The first part ( time) is easy. rep(1:24, 365) But how do I get a series of 24 dates for O1 January 2005 and repeat this to 31 December 2005. It should be easy but I don't see it. Thanks

Response to R across the university
This email isn't asking for assistance, but I thought R-help readers would find it interesting. This week we offered a half-day introduction to R for researchers at Augsburg University. The response was astonishing. Although Augsburg has no medical faculty and no engineers, there was far too much demand, with interest from every faculty (barring theology, "for one small

[LLVMdev] Variable length condition code for SETCC and SELECT?
After a hiatus on the CellSPU development, I've got all of the instructions necessary to get the llvm-gcc frontend to build. I've now discovered a new and interesting problem that I'm not sure how to solve cleanly and it's due to the fact that CellSPU has no fixed size condition flags. CellSPU's condition flags depend on the size of what's being compared, i.e., if both

Questionnaire Analysis virtually without continuous Variables
Hello! I am doing an analysis on a questionnaire of hunters taken in 4 different districts of some mysterious foreign country. The aim of the study was to gather info on the factors that determine the hunting success of a peculiarly beautiful bird in that area. All variables are factors, i.e. they are variables such as "Use of Guns - yes / no", "Use of Dogs - yes / no" and
