Strange problem on lmtp with dovecot 2.3.2.1

success but now i'm facing a strange problem on communication from postfix
installed on server A with dovecot installed on server B (which version is
2.3.2.1). All incoming emails delivered from esternal from server A to
server B with LMTP is rejected with this message error
"smtpgw postfix/lmtp[1772]: 6194CA00B3: to=<xxxxxxxxxxxx at mail.cgilfe.it>,
relay=192.168.10.50[192.168.10.50]:24, delay=0.02, delays=0/0.01/0.01/0,
dsn=5.5.4, status=undeliverable (host 192.168.10.50[192.168.10.50] said:
501 5.5.4 Invalid FROM: Missing domain (in reply to MAIL FROM command))"...

lmtp bouncing -- Invalid parameters (in reply to MAIL FROM command)
I just configured postfix' virtual_transport to point at my dovecot
director, but am seeing occational problems like this:

...box running smbfs/smbmount that hangs or some server running
samba? Do you get an oops or anything in the logfiles or on the console?
Which kernel is this? If < 2.4.4 I'd try updating the kernel.

Samba, HSM and Windows 2000 Data Center.
Background:
I have a Windows 2000 Data Center Server (4 way 4GB Mem) running as a
CIFS client to a Sun E5500 (the samba server with similar memory CPU
etc).
The Sun E5500 is running LSCI's "ASM" software which manages a
StorageTek powderhorn tape library.
There is ample 622 ATM bandwidth between the two servers for samba
traffic.
