smbmount, smbumount and smbmnt
Hi, I am deploying samba for an embedded system. The requirement is that the system should be able to mount windows share points. I believe "smbmount, smbumount and smbmnt" components are needed to do the same. I am not very clear about smbmnt though! I find that smbmount, smbumount and smbmnt are all quite huge. Around 300 to 400Kb each. I understand that Samba is capable of doing complex things. However if all i need is the ability to mount and un...

Linux SMB Mount utils patch
...32 bits. This causes problems obviously when trying to mount the share. Basically the permissions and ownership as all screwed up. The fix is to replace uid_t with __kernel_uid_t and the others the same way. With these small changes all the mount utilities compile correctly, with the exception of smbumount, which required $(LIBS) be added to the object dependancies in the Makefile. So now I have a copy of Samba and the smb mount utils that works properly with glibc2. I cleaned up my changes so that samba now automatically detects whether or not your glibc2 defines struct semun, I fixed all reference...

Q. Minimal smbfs installation
Hi I am trying to create a boot diskette(s) that is able to mount a remote drive (on an NT server) using smbfs. I have tried doing this, but I can't fit smbd, nmbd, smbmount and smbumount all onto my root disk. What is the minimum set of files required for smbfs to work? What docs should I read to help me? I am running RedHat 6.2 (with a custom kernel v 2.2.14, ntfs and network card support compiled in). My plan is to boot from the diskettes and back up data from dead NT worksta...

smbfs
Hi- I'm working on a graphical interface to smbclient/smbmount/smbumount. As part of its operation, it will mount shares in directories under a user's home directory. I've run into a bit of a problem regarding the distributions of the mount utilities, specifically on Redhat 5.1/5.2. They are shipping an RPM with smbfs 2.0.1, which is known to have a security...

Mounting and Unmounting shares
...logs on he's got the same mounts as the prior user. Everytime the original user logs in the mounts are regenerated. In my runlevel file I"ve got smb running in levels 3 and 5. From there I put the smbmount command in my /home/.profile script. I created a .bash_logout script and put smbumount in there but that doesn't appear to be read and used. Any ideas? Eric

About smbfs: smb_get_length error
Hi All: When I use samfs, sometimes I got the following messages, Mr. Google says this is because the windows client use the share, and the connection is "reconnected"! Does it right? How to ward off the error? Is there any potential problem if I ignore it? My actions are smbmount and smbumount some shares. Sometimes some shares are smbumount before they mounted (thus cause a smbumount fail). smb_get_length: recv error = 5 smb_request: result -5, setting invalid smb_retry: successful, new pid=1172, generation=2 smb_get_length: recv error = 5 smb_request: result -5, setting invalid smb_r...

fstab based shared user mounts not possible
...degradation, because I would want every user allowed to mount that share at the same location, the way it works with other "user" mounts. Now mount works, but umount causes me trouble: > umount: only root can unmount //workstation/share from /mnt/mountpoint This is only for umount, smbumount works. So overall as a workaround I can use smbmount and smbumount and have every user create a mount point owned by himself. But it would be great if SMB mounts could be handld just as any other mount specified in /etc/fstab. Especially as the smbmount manpage states that usually smbmount is invo...

Need a cron script written
I do this manually: smbmount //Beverley/C /home/data pwd: "insert pwd" cp -ruv /home/samba/public /home/data smbumount /home/data This lets me do the following: make a copy of all my samba shares on the server to a client named Beverley C drive. ruv does the following recursive (all subdirectories and subfolders) unchanged (only write over when newer) verbose pwd: "insert pwd" would be my password for...

process hang when accessing a mounted smbfs
Hi all, I installed the samba 3.0.3 on a Fedora Core 2 and then samba 3.0.6-1 and still have the following problem. When I mount a smbfs, it sucesses but processes hang when they access the mount point and smbumount returns "Device busy". Since even system halt fails unmounting the filesystem, I have to switch off the machine. I tested either with smbmount command, or /etc/fstab entry and mount command, as root or common user, with a Linux or Windows server, but the problem still occurs. Note th...

mounting a Samba volume on startup
...(Access denied.) Samba connection failed. Or something like that. The number always changes, but the message is always the same. The thing is, immediately after bootup I can mount the volume without any problem as root. The suggestions that I've gotten so far are: Make the smbmount and smbumount scripts root, or use sudo. This won't work because a) the message isn't "Only root can mount this" as it is when it's a permissions problem, b) the scripts STILL don't work even when they're suid root, and c) sudo would only allow a normal user to mount it AFTER b...

smbfs input/output error
...server share on my linux machine would mysteriously die after a period of time (a long time? not being used? don't know why, but hours of unuse). I would get an "input/output error" when I tried to do a df later. To get around the problem, I found I needed to "umount" (not smbumount) the directory and then smbumount it again. I was told this would be fixed in 2.0.6. In 2.0.6 the problem is worse! I see the same mysterious mount failure after an unspecified amount of time. And I was still able to umount the directory so I could do a df without any failures or warnings....

smbmount & solaris 7
Has anyone out there had success with smbmount smbumount and solaris 7? If so, please let me know how you installed it; ideally, I'd like to add it using pkgadd. So far I only have smbclient working. Thanks, Kevin
