I have SATA drives and have found that the newest smartmontools package will retrieve smart data from SATA drives with the '-d ata' switch. Is there a devel/testing package of kernel-utils available or should I just roll my own? Rik

At my physics lab we have 30 servers with 1TB disk packs. I am in need of monitoring for disk failures. I have been reading about SMART and it seems it can help. However, I am not sure what to look for if a drive is about to fail. Any thoughts about this? Is anyone using this method to predetermine disk failures? TIA

This happens every few seconds and leaving it connected overnight changed nothing. I installed smartmontools but the disk is not even recognized by my system as a /dev/sd* device and therefore not accessible to smartd (at least as far as I know it.) Been moving along just fine for a couple years now, then in the last two days, email has slowed to a crawl.
