Any plans to update kernel-utils for newer smartmontools
I have SATA drives and have found that the newest smartmontools package
will retrieve smart data from SATA drives with the '-d ata' switch.
Is there a devel/testing package of kernel-utils available or should I
just roll my own?

SMART for SATA devices ?
I noticed that the changelog for the new kernel 2.6.9-34 on the redhat
enterprise watchlist states on of the fixes as;
145061 - SMART support in SATA driver (P1)
Does this mean that with that kernel we should be able to interrogate SATA drives now ?
Cheers,
Bards.

smartmontools
I'm in the process of rolling out the upgrade from (mostly) 5.3 to 5.4.
One of my servers started throwing the following:

MB/s DT (12.5 ns, offset 62)
Nov 1 05:22:51 <server> kernel: target4:0:1: FAST-80 WIDE SCSI 160.0
MB/s DT (12.5 ns, offset 62)
into my logs every half hour. I don't see anything

Help! how to infer failed fileName|inode from LBA sector for ext3 on Fedora Linux??
Hi,
I have an ext3 file system question for a while: How to obtain failed
file (inode) from LBA section reported by Linux kernel? The following
lines are a simple example:

DriveReady SeekComplete Error }
FCbox1: Nov 1 04:08:59 FCbox1 kernel: hda: dma_intr: error=0x40 {

S.M.A.R.T
At my physics lab we have 30 servers with 1TB disk packs. I am in need
of monitoring for disk failures. I have been reading about SMART and
it seems it can help. However, I am not sure what to look for if a
drive is about to fail. Any thoughts about this? Is anyone using this
method to predetermine disk failures?
TIA

Using a single class multiple times
Hi-
Recently starting using puppet while migrating an existing messy group
of systems to some nice new hardware. Things are going incredibly well,
and puppet''s functioning great. Have a bit of a headache. I''d like to
keep myself from duplicating lots of included classes. Lets say I have
this (snippet of a) class:
class dbserver {

Looking for a good disk exerciser
I recently added a Seagate 400Gb SATA drive to my system, and it has been
behaving strangely since I put it in. for one thing, the BIOS S.M.A.R.T.
came up with a warning the last time I booted with it enabled, saying that I
should backup my data and replace the disk (!).
I still have not made any irreversible data transfers to this drive, and I
have some time yet to take it back, but I'd

...d it and could see that the head assembly rests outside the disk but when it is powered on, the head first moves to the center of the disk, then to the periphery and finally back to the resting position. This happens every few seconds and leaving it connected overnight changed nothing.
I installed smartmontools but the disk is not even recognized by my system as a /dev/sd* device and therefore not accessible to smartd (at least as far as I know it.)
Any suggestions for what I could try? I am running CentOS 7.
Thank you.

Mail slowed down to a crawl...
Been moving along just fine for a couple years now, then in the last two days, email has slowed to a crawl.
Retrieving email via IMAP is very slow, progress bar in the mail client shows that it is downloading messages almost constantly, like it never closes the connection, or it?s getting the messages very slowly. The server that dovecot/postfix is on has also bogged down to a crawl.
