Easy way to strip down CentOS?
Hi,
I wonder if there's an easy way to strip down an installation to the
bare minimum, e. g. the packages you get when you select "minimum
installation".
In Slackware, the bone-headed package manager slackpkg has a few nice
options, among which 'slackpkg clean-system', which removes all
third-party packages in one single operation, or 'slackpkg remove
<package_group>', which does exactly that.
I know CentOS has yum groupinstall/groupremove etc. but as far as I can
tell, if I o...

Re: Add support for slackware in supermin
Hi Pino,
Thanks for your reply and details.
I started looking at the others package manager code and as I see it there
is one main problem to port supermin to slackware distro.
Slackware builtin package management tools (pkgtool and slackpkg) do not
manage package dependencies. There is no easy solution to solve this
problem.
There are third party packet manager which manage dependencies but they are
not supported and I don't personnaly use it.
It would be possible to make supermin install only the packages entered on
the command...

getent problems with new Samba version
...I used the -n (disable caching) switch, thus
apparently, it did not use the cached 3000026 UID.
A bit disconcerting was that the GID in the recent test was still 10000 instead of reverting to
100 (which is defined in idmap.ldb). Not sure why that didn't revert with no cache.
My theory: when slackpkg installed Samba 4.4.8, it did all that directory moving as we've
already discussed, but also probably DID NOT MOVE the /var/lib/samba/winbindd_cache.tdb file (a
guess). With no cache, winbindd authenticated using idmap.ldb, which in the case of user 'mark'
returned UID:GID 200026:100....

hi Mathieu
I'm on holiday at the moment and will give a more complete reply
when I get back. In brief you need to be able to do a few simple
package database meta operations such as listing all files in a

tripwire
Tripwire is probably one of must-have utilities for many system
administrators. However, it is missing from almost all recent Red
Hattish distributions. IMO, probably due to the fact that source
compiles only on i386, and needs patches to compile almost every time
new major version of gcc is released. However, in absence of good
replacement, this is all we have. (IMO, other tools such as AIDE

FreeBSD Security Survey
Dear FreeBSD users and system administrators,
While the FreeBSD Security Team has traditionally been very good at
investigating and responding to security issues in FreeBSD, this only
solves half of the security problem: Unless users and administrators
of FreeBSD systems apply the security patches provided, the advisories
issued accomplish little beyond alerting potential attackers to the
