call "load balancing"
Hello All,
Wondering what sort of real world mileage people are getting out of
different internet connecions - i.e. different DSL connection speeds,
cable modems, etc... Is it reasonable to hope to carry 10 - 15
concurrent calls on a 768K DSL? I'm not talking about theoretical BW or
looking for any difinitive absolute guarantee... With DSL and Cable -
there is no guarantee, so I'm

Bug? IE, getElementsByClassName and "length"
So, I have this form/datagrid thing. I want to have a button that
clears the fields (not a reset, which would set them to the default
state, I want them blank.) For various reasons, getByClassName seemed
the best way to deal with this.
Everything was fine on Moz/Firefox. Safari seems fine. But IE...
Some detective work later, it seems that the problem is caused by
*another* field on the page.

Removing intermediate variables in calculation
Hello,
I have a small Puppet 2.7 module to configure Sonatype Nexus Professional.
The module takes, among other things, a baseurl in the form of
"http://example.com/path" and I''d like it to extract the "/path" from that
variable into a separate variable IF an optional "path" variable haven''t
been supplied.
Here is an extract:

boot and variances of the bootstrap replicates of the variable of interest?
I want to use boot.ci to generate confidence intervals over the
bootstrapped mean(s) of a group of observations (i.e. I have 10
observations and I want to know how confident I can be on the value for
the mean).
I don't know (or want to know) the details of bootstrapping - I just have
the simplistic idea of taking samples, measuring a statistic on the
sample, and getting some confidence in the

Blank Machine Again.
After a bit of looking around, I realise that my initial descision to
go for Fedora Core 3 may have been a bit premature, (I read that some
experienced users are having issues with this version) so I'm starting
again.
I just tried Xorcom Rapid, but it looks bloody complicated, and fairly
stripped back.
Which is the simplest (and most supported / used) distro / asterisk
version to use from

Asterisk Performance 350 Concurrent Channels Working Nicely
Hi All,
This is a performance update. I have built appliance type servers
with the following specs:
Motherboard Asus P5MT-M
Memory 1Gig DDR2
No hard drive, running in Ramdrive but using Sandisk Compact Flash to
hold compressed image and /var directory
Processor 3.2 Gig Pentium 4, HT Turned Off
2 on-board Gig NICs
I'm using asterisk with looping call test configs to play audio and

Is this with Asterisk in the RTP stream? Is it doing any transcoding?

Top RubyForge Downloads
I thought that the list of top RubyForge downloads was interesting:
(6,992) Ruby Release Mirror
(2,539) Win32 Utils
(1,994) FreeRIDE
(1,569) RMagick
(1,470) AEditor
(1,418) wxRuby
In looking at this, I discard the top two entries -- the first because
that''s Ruby itself, and the second because Win32 Utils is broken up into
*lots* of packages that are downloaded separately and this skews

CentOS VPN server for iPhone
So far, OpenVPN has been working very well for me. Unfortunately, the
iPhone doesn't have (yet?) an OpenVPN client, so I'm forced to work with
what's available.
The options are: L2TP, PPTP and IPSec. If you were to install a VPN
endpoint on CentOS, which protocol would you prefer? The condition is to
avoid shabby VPN servers that make the system less secure. I've seen

new wine user, basic advice needed
i am new to wine and linux in general, and i thought i would ask, for those few programs from windows that i'd want to stick with, how should i go about strengthening my install of wine? is there any add-on i might want to use? or any basic programs or files i need to copy into it to get things enhanced on a basic level? just basic beginner advice is really what im looking for.
thanks!

help with permissions
Hi, i have a rather weird and also problematic use case.
My NAS provides permissions but I don't know how.
The share is mounted using unix extensions and I am seeing user IDs.
However my /local/ filesystem refuses me to allow to do anything unless
I am root or set the noperms flag (ostensibly).
This means that locally write access is denied but not remotely.
The local user is UID 1000.

runaway smbd hogging system & ethernet cable bandwidth
Greetings all;
I've probably got something miss-configured, but I have an
intermittent smbd problem, where it will use 15% or so of this
machine and nearly all the much slower firewall box.
I'll try to give enough data here, so my apologies about the length of
this post.
The installed samba versions on this very heavily patched RH8.0
machine are:

R's IO speed
R-devel now has some improved versions of read.table and write.table.
For a million-row data frame containing one number, one factor with few
levels and one logical column, a 56Mb object.
generating it takes 4.5 secs.
calling summary() on it takes 2.2 secs.
writing it takes 8 secs and an additional 10Mb.
saving it in .rda format takes 4 secs.
reading it naively takes 28 secs and an
