Conservancy (home of Samba) needs support for GPL enforcement.
...n with two make-or-break levels: a lower level
that will just sustain the organization for a 'bare minimum' service plan to
our member projects, and a separate, higher level to continue doing copyleft
enforcement.
You can read more detail about all of this on our website:
http://sfconservancy.org/supporter/
You, our existing Supporters already understand what we do (check out the
list of this year's successes on the fundraising page
http://sfconservancy.org/supporter/) and why it's important. A very high
percentage of you are prominent contributors, speakers, writers and le...

Samba Team encourages supporting the Software Freedom Conservancy
For a number of years now, the Samba Team has been a member of the
Software Freedom Conservancy. They handle quite a bit of administration
for our project as well as pursuing GPL compliance. If you'd like to
see more about what they do, please check: https://sfconservancy.org/about/
We urge you to support the Conservancy. Here is a message from our own
Jeremy Allison:

Forming a "Project Leadership Committee"
Xapian is in the process of joining the Software Freedom Conservancy
(https://sfconservancy.org/), but one thing we need to sort out before
we can finalise this is some sort of more formal project leadership
structure.
James Aylett and I have discussed this with Bradley Kuhn from
Conservancy, and we think the most appropriate model currently would be
a small group of at least 3 (to a...

We are equally excited about working with you over summer.

Current RHEL fragmentation landscape
...many.? At the time, I was
confused about why IBM purchased Red Hat for an astronomical amount.?
Well, it is clear now.? As the readers know, there is a significant
defect in the GPL: A Comprehensive Analysis of the GPL Issues With the
Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) Business Model
<https://sfconservancy.org/blog/2023/jun/23/rhel-gpl-analysis/> The
terms of the license are enforceable, not the spirit
I think the Rocky Linux workaround will eventually fail.? I expect IBM
already has a plan for all contingencies.
There is reason for anger.? Is there a reason for hope?

Renaming The Default Branch
Hi Everyone,
Many tech communities, including GitHub <https://github.com/github/renaming>
and Git <https://sfconservancy.org/news/2020/jun/23/gitbranchname/>, have
moved away from term “master branch” and replaced it with “main branch” in
an
effort to remove unnecessary references to slavery and use more inclusive
terms. This was also discussed on the LLVM-dev mailing list
<https://lists.llvm.org/pipermail...

Software Freedom Conservancy creates Supporters program.
Apologies if this is a little off-topic,
but the Software Freedom Conservancy (which
is the legal umberella organization for
the Samba Project and may other Free Software
projects such as Wine) just announced their
"Supporters" program:
http://sfconservancy.org/supporter/
Please check it out, and if you're
feeling generous - join :-).
Disclaimer: I'm on the Board of Directors
of Conservancy (an unpaid position).
Cheers,
Jeremy.

R on the Cydia Store
...g obvious has been done outside the letter of
the GPL. It is also not clear than any improper use has been made of R
Foundation trademarks (such as the R logo).
If a lawyer is consulted, one way to find such a lawyer would be to
start with someone at the Software Freedom Conservancy:
https://sfconservancy.org/
They have contacts with attorneys with experience in GPL licensing and
commercialization, in multiple countries.

Brian
