I am getting large numbers of these types of messages in my maillog files: somehost.hotmail.com [65.54.246.97] did not issue MAIL/EXPN/VRFY/ETRN during connection to MTA on both of our external machines beginning on the same date. We have a reproducible problem with FreeBSD-4.7 which is apparently a deadlock. The system is undergoing a filesystem stress test. The machine is pingable, but console and most other features are unresponsive. The console debugger can be accessed. The following information is available with db's "ps". I suspect the wchan of "inode" to be what everything is waiting on.

I have been updating my FreeBSD systems for many years by updating and building from source. For the FreeBSD 9.2 cycle, I decided to use freebsd-update for binary update instead. I use Sendmail + Cyrus-SASL and the freebsd-update process only installed a 'bare bones' binary. How do I compile just Sendmail from source so that it uses my /etc/make.conf for the smtp_auth components?

What's the reason for the burst of sendmail complaints below? My CentOS 4.3 server only handles internal mail for my small network. It doesn't handle Internet mail at all, so I guess I can't blame a crack attempt for this. IPTables rules should prevent external connections to everything except SSH's port 22. After moving from Centos 5.6 to Centos 6, I figured that Sendmail minor version was updated from 8.13.x to 8.14 and Dovecto from 1.2 to 2.0.x In previous configuration SMTP auth worked fine (no SASAUTHD neccessary) for virtual users table. Dovecot was authenticating virtual users virtual checking dovecot.passwd file. I'm not sure how Sendmail was processing SMTP AUTH for virtual users
