RAID hard drive serial numbers?
smartctl, hdparm, and sdparm all are valuable tools to obtain hard drive
info. But, they don't seem to work, at least, on obtaining hard drive info
from drives on a Dell PERC controller. Instead, I'm given basic PERC
controller info, not drive info.
Is there a tool to let me get the hard drive make/model/serial nu...

Problem enabling write-back cache for IBM ServeRAID controller in CENTOS 4.2
...Rev: 1.00
Type: Direct-Access ANSI SCSI revision: 02
SCSI device sda: 213288960 512-byte hdwr sectors (109204 MB)
SCSI device sda: drive cache: write through
sda: sda1 sda2
If I boot CentOS 3.6 in rescue mode I have write back cache enabled.
I have tried to use the sdparm utility to enable write back cache but it
says that this parameter is not changeable.
sdparm --get=WCE /dev/sda -6
/dev/sda: IBM SERVERAID 1.00
WCE 0 [Changeable: n, def: 0, saved: 0]
I have looked at the ips module parameters but none seem to affect the
write cache. A...

[RFC] [PATCH] SCSI passthrough for virtio-blk
Hi all,
I got bored and implemented SCSI passthrough for the virtio-blk driver.
Principle is quite simple, just put the missing fields (cdb, sense and
status header) on the virtio queue and then call the SG_IO ioctl on the
host.
So when using '-drive file=/dev/sgXX,if=virtio,format=host_device' you
can happily call any sg_XX command on the resulting vdX device. Quite
neat, methinks. And

OpenSolaris ZFS NAS Setup
If it''s of interest, I''ve written up some articles on my experiences of building a ZFS NAS box which you can read here:
http://breden.org.uk/2008/03/02/a-home-fileserver-using-zfs/
I used CIFS to share the filesystems, but it will be a simple matter to use NFS instead: issue the command ''zfs set sharenfs=on pool/filesystem'' instead of ''zfs set

One disk speed problem [SOLVED], and a question on hdparm
I believe I've posted before about one of the speed issues we were having,
of backups taking many, many hours that should *not* take that long.
My manager and I finally nailed it down to the h/d itself. Identical
boxes, and he tried a backup of one system which took under two hours,
while the same regular one rand nearly six.
I'd been googling on and off for weeks, and this morning, ran
