Standard location for hotplug-time hdparm invocation
I need to disable the spin-down on an external USB drive because it spins down spontaneously while in use. The drive forgets the spindown-disable state across power outage so I need to reissue the hdparm command with each boot or hotplug. Where should I put the hdparm command to do this?

One disk speed problem [SOLVED], and a question on hdparm
...low this. This also probably explains parted's completely aggravating complaint that the partition's not aligned, but gives you no idea *why*, or how to align it - I pulled the drive into parted, and told it to print, and it did *not* complain the partition wasn't aligned. Next trick: hdparm. I want to disable, or at least shove way up, the spindown timeout on these drives, which, depending on the thread you read, is 6 or 8 seconds. hdparm should let me do that... but before I do, I'd like to know what it's set at. Does anyone know how to find that out? And no, the manpage is w...

Advice on virtio, or any virtualization solution for hdparm
At the present moment, my guest is running inside qemu and host is kvm intel, running Ubuntu 14.04, kernel is 4.3.0 stable. From within the guest, when I run "hdparm -i /dev/sdb" on the guest, I get: HDIO_GET_IDENTITY failed: Invalid argument as the error, but on the host, I will get the full harddisk/SSD info. Can I know how to resolve this so that the output is the same for both host and guest? My strace of hdparm from within the guest (just "-e...

question about disk performance in domU
...s of a cluster and they have same hardware configurations. domU (cctest1) is created by exporting loopback files from dom0 on ccn9 as VBD backends. The application execution logs there might be some disk I/O difference between cctest and ccn10, so I did some disk performance profiling with "hdparms" on cctest1 (domU), ccn10 (native Linux), ccn9 (dom0), and ccn9 (native Linux). Also, I checked the "DMA" config information from the output of dmesg. I tried to run "hdparm -i" and "hdparm -I" but they didn''t work. Seems they didn''t work wit...

diagnosing noise
Though quiet at the moment, my desktop sometimes sometimes makes a noise that I attribute to either a disk or a fan on its last legs. I'm looking for suggestions for distinguishing. For the disk, I expect I should use either hdparm of fsck. Even after reading the man page, I'm not sure how I would use hdparm. If I use fsck, what should I take as evidence of a bad drive? A good drive? Is there a way to tell whether the OS thinks a fan is on? Is there a way to turn a fan on or off manually? Time for a backup. -- Michae...

kjournald using up majority cpu%.
We run several RH7.2/7.3 servers & recently 2 of them, although still working fine, have started to show kjournald as generally using over 50% cpu% on 'top' - virtually continuously. Free cpu% generally less than 25% now! Both machines are also using software RAID5 EIDE ....... otherwise are standard server installs. Any info on what kjournald is & why it should have recently

new ssd to play with
I grabbed a new SSD M4-CT064M4SSD2 from Crucial. I am disappointed. I stuck the unit in an Atom machine (zotac) with CentOS 6 on the disk. It really doesn't "feel" faster than the previous 5400 RPM drive that was in it. The SSD is giving me (in the zotac running centos 6): hdparm -t /dev/sda /dev/sda: Timing buffered disk reads: 298 MB in 3.00 seconds = 99.30 MB/sec The Samsung 5400 RPM disk (in the zotac running Centos 6): hdparm -t /dev/sda /dev/sda: Timing buffered disk reads: 196 MB in 3.01 seconds = 65.02 MB/sec I'm not supper impressed at all. Sure t...
