cpu type
I have a quick question.
The board and CPU that I'm using in one of my machines was given
to me. I didn't take the time to look up the info on the board or
anything. I was busy, so I just put the board in a pc case, hooked
everything up, and loaded the os on the machine.
I didn't know it at the time, but there's a chance it may be a
64bit board and cpu. I don't

Help with backups
I've got a Redhat 5 server running Samba, and two dualboot CentOS 5
workstations.
Until we get a better backup strategy, I'm backing up the workstations to the
server via mounting a shared samba drive to /mnt.
Trying tar cvf /mnt/samba_share/backup.tar /* eventually yields backing up
/mnt, which produces an unwanted loop, including /mnt/samba_share
I looked at tar with --exclude /mnt

shoutcast perl module
Hi
I've recently upgraded the Perl Shout v1.0 library to accomodate the
new libshout and icecast2 formats. I have a tarball I'd like to submit;
who might I send it to?
Thanks,

forcing Y on yum upgrades
I'd like to be able to do a "yum upgrade" without having to hit Y each time.
While "yum install -y [program]}" seems to work, "yum -y upgrade" doesn't
seem to. Is there a way to easily do this?

Linux for zVM
Hello folks,
I hope I am not on the wrong list.
I am looking to install Linux under zVM 5.1 and I can barely spell
LinUX.
How should I go about it and what Linux distributions can be used under
zVM?
Thanks.

centos 5 iptables
Hi,
I applied a set of iptables rules and started iptables without any trouble.
But after i edited the rules and restarting it, it gives me "Applying
iptables firewall rules: iptables-restore: line 35 failed". I looked into
/etc/sysconfig/ for the mentioned file and it was not found. I did a quick
check and locate only found /sbin/iptables-restore. I had done updatedb

Program that opens documents with their associated program
This may be a TOTALLY trivial question (and maybe inappropriate for
this list), but I don't know where else to ask it:
On my Mac I've got this wonderful command line utility that opens
documents with the program that is associated to them in the Finder
(the graphical file manager) like they were clicked in the
file-manager. For instance: if I type
open testdocument.doc
it opens the file

Gnome Taskbar(s)
Question:
All the newer Gnome distributions seem to configure themselves with
two small "taskbars" (panels, I guess) one at the top and one at the
bottom.
I prefer the older scheme with one larger one (usually) at the bottom.
When I install Centos5 in the near future I'm going to want to be able
to restore the old-style panels. Anybody know what I need to change to
make it work

dovecot fails to start at boot, but starts manually
dovecot-1.0-1.2.rc15.el5 on CentOS 5
I reboot the server and dovecot fails to start. But I can then issue
"service dovecot start" and it starts up just fine. How to debug? I don't
see anything in /var/log/messages nor /var/log/maillog.
I did have to set SELinux to permissive (in /etc/selinux/config), as
dovecot can't get at its SSL certs. I'm debugging that

NFS and iptables issues
I've got a newly installed Centos 5.0 box, planned to replace an ageing server
(solaris box). I've set up the nfs shares, but the other solaris boxes
won't mount them, unless I turn of iptables on the Centos box. If I do that,
they mount, and all operations tested to date work fine.
Iptables is allowing the 2049 tcp and udp ports already. What else needs to

Off Subject
Pardon me for asking this general question with regards to Samba but I've been searching and haven't found a source that would answer my question.
Is there some site, list, etc, that lists companies, schools, etc, who have volunteered information that they use Samba in their day-to-day operations?
This would be of great interest to us as it would show Linux/Samba to be a viable

NIS problems after installation
so, i just installed CentOS on our server and set up NIS using the same
configuration as on our other server, but the clients' ypbind services
complain that although they can find the correct server, the server does
not respond to requests.
to debug this, i've:
* pinged the server using its ip and it's name
* ssh'ed to the server using it's ip and name

perl libshout
Hi,
I've just completed a conversion of the perl Shout-1.0 library
to something that will talk to an icecast2 server. I'll be submitting
the results for inclusion back to the icecast site.
One thing is missing: proper metadata support.
this feature has changed since icecast 1; previously it was a
single string. now, it's a linked list of key/value pairs.

Hi,
Is it possible to use more than one default route? I believe yes.
Any comments on them. If I use more than one, where will the trafficc be
diverted from?
With warm regards,

is CentOS stable enough ?
hello to all,
i am a newbie to CentOS. for my project work i need to have
RHEL. so i searched Google for Open alternatives and found CentOS to
be most popular.
i have used Fedora, the base of RHEL and CentOS. Fedora is the one of
the most buggy *NIX distro i have ever seen. since Fedora is the base
of RHEL which is the base of CentOS, i just want to know whether
CentOS is stable and reliable
