OpenSSH-2.5.1p1 scp hangs when scping into an RH (6.0|7.0) box
I just compiled OpenSSH-2.5.1p1 from source on my Debian potato box
using:
--prefix=/usr/local/openssh --enable-gnome-askpass --with-tcp-wrappers
--with-ipv4-default --with-ipaddr-display
--libexecdir=/usr/local/openssh/lib --disable-suid-ssh --with-pam
I am running OpenSSL-0.9.5a compiled from source with:
--prefix=/usr/local/openssl --openssldir=/usr/local/openssl
I can scp into my other

Frustrated...Samba on linux w/xfs SLOW problem
I have a very simple setup here that I have recently made some
modifications to and it has affected my ability to save files to the
linux samba server.
The recent changes are: converted all fs's to xfs from ext3.
Upgraded to latest kernel 2.6.7 from a 2.4 kernel.
Samba used to work fine. Now, I can copy files out of my linux samba
server to my windows machine at full speed. However, when

Performance problem
...am running rsync version 2.5.7 (stock distro on redhat linux, ES
and 9) to rsync a directory with ~300k files in it from a machine on a
10Mbit internet tap to a machine with a 100Mbit internet tap. The
problem is that I am only getting about 500Kbps during the transfer. I
have tested link speed by scping a file between the two systems,
performance was approximately 7.5Mbit/sec. Ping time between the two
locations is about 2.5 ms (only 20 miles apart)
This is obviously a problem. I have also tried rsyncing just a few files
(say 400) to rule out problems related to huge file lists, however I had

Unusable performance over WAN (part 2)
Hi all,
Disregard my previous posts, I've consolidated everything here.
I'm having terrible performance issues with samba over a WAN
(point-to-point T1 link).
Doing a copy of a 2MB file from a samba server to a linux client
running smbclient takes over 5 minutes.
SCPing the same file takes seconds.
The server is running samba version 3.0.25c with kernel 2.6.16.18.
I've put up a set of debugging logs at:
http://emagiccards.com/james/sambalogs.tar.bz2
Inside are 3 files:
smb.conf - the configuration of the samba server
log.agard - the level 10 debug log of th...

scp and key login
...with his certificate, no
password prompt.
When User on PC A runs a scp operation from B to C he's asked for the
password on C.
Does the scp actually open a connection from B to C (User doesn't have a
certificate on B)? This would explain the problem. I hoped to avoid such a
problem by scping from a third machine that normally has certificate-based
access to all machines.

FreeBSD bridge + filtering, BIG problem
Hi,
I'm afraid about having find a freebsd 5X security issue.
We have recently upgraded one gateway from 4.10 to 5.3... Following network
used:
[ISP]--xl1--[FW01]-----xl0--em0--[SR01]
|
|--fxp0--em0--[SR02]
On fw01, we have one jail.
So fw01 is configured as a bridge on xl1,xl0,fxp0. Services works (before
and after upgrade).
On 4.10, we used

Filesystem fragmentation and scatter-gather DMA
When designing a filesystem, is fragmentation really an issue if
access to the disk can be done using scatter-gather DMA techics ?

[PATCH 00/13] Patch blast of salsa wip.testme branch
The contents are the wip.testme branch currently on salsa. I combined
the wip.initscript and wip.oxenstored into this and added more things
today. I think this is pretty gtg and it's smoke tested (in several
cases by scping files around instead of doing package build), so it
needs a final extra review and test round before putting it in master
branch (which I don't want to force push).
I redid the xenstored init script changes, also including stipped down
/etc/default/xen again. I tested happy and sad paths in th...

OS for rails development: Windows vs. Mac?
Caveat: this is not a discussion about *hosting* a rails app on windows.
Anyway...Macs are everywhere you look when researching rails (demo vids,
tutorials, and pictures from rails training classes). I''m interested in
what the pros to using a Mac for rails development are (besides
textmate). Is it more of a cultural thing, a what would 37 signals do
thing, is it a unix thing, or
