installing WIndows at end of disk
I have a functional CentOS system on which I need to install Windows
for dual boot. I can make some space available on a high partition.
Can WIndows be installed on partition 8 (starting with 1)? I have
always done it on the first partition.
Thanks,

MPPE required, but kernel has no support.
Ok, on to new swamps.
I would like to enable PPTP on CentOS4 to accept connections from
clients running MicroSoft Win2K and XP pro from outside our firewall.
I am testing pptpd-1.2.3-0 and tells me that I need kernel support
for MPPE, which I suppose is MicroSoft's own form of PtoP encryption.
Is there a way of doing this without rebuilding the kernel? If so,
how?

Jim

Need Dual Boot Installation Help
...u don't have to play with NTLDR.
I know that this goes against just about every Dual-Boot HOWTO you will find on the net.
It just works. It has on every dual-boot install I have ever done.

rpm scriptlet failed
I have a system (Centos 4.4 all packages uptodate) where almost every
rpm or yum operation fails with a message like e.g.:

some times the error is on %post()
the last few lines of output from
rpm -e -vv a2ps

unable to write files bigger than 4GB over NFS
This may not be a CentOS problem, because I'm in a mixed environment.
But I put it out in case anybody has any thoughts.
I recently replaced a file server, which was on a Pentium III based
system running 32-bit CentOS 4.3, with an Opteron based system
running Fedora 4. The NFS clients are all CentOS 4.3, some are 32 bit
and some are 64 bit.
Since the replacement, when I try to write

ssl and NameVirtualHost
I recently aquired a Verisign SSL certificate for my web server on
Centos 4, with apache 2.0.59 from centosplus.
It however doesn't seem to be working the way I've set it up,
browsers connect but are told the certiticate is not recognized.
Showing more info, the information looks correct.
I think it has probably to do with the fact that I'm using the
certificate on a virtual

postfix relay and mail host for HPC cluster
I've so far been unable to make the following work:
I have a small cluster with a master node ( called bayes.bc.edu on
the public network, and called master.cl.bc.edu on the internal
10.0.0.0 network). and a number of nodes which are purely on the
private network.
I want the master to receive mail and deliver locally (or use .forward
and alias rules) to messages sent from the nodes

deleting selected partition in kickstart
I am trying kickstart for the first time, and am running into
something I don't see described in the documentation.
Somewhere between me and my purchasing department and Dell, my order
for 6 PE 1850s was changed from "no installed OS" to WIndows. So I
received the boxes with Windows pre-installed.
I would like to delete the NTFS partition with Windows, but keep the

mod_security
I've set up a CentOS 5 system as a server for http installs.
Currently up-to-date with
httpd-2.2.3-11.el5_1.centos.3
mod_security-2.1.7-1.el5
my installs were failing just after the root password set up, before
software selection.
I tracked it down to a server error 500 and it was due to
mod_security claiming the comps.xml file was too big

centos 5, openmpi and alternatives
When I install openmpi, openmpi-libs and openmpi-devel (using yum)
for CentOS 5, I'm not getting anything set in alternatives for mpi-

Is it supposed to?

kmod-xfs and weak-updates
I installed kmod-xfs-0.4-2 back with kernel-2.6.18-92.1.13. I have
updated kernels but there have been no new kmod-xfs. It still works
because of weak-updates (I guess). Currently:

/lib/modules/2.6.18-92.1.13.el5/extra/xfs/xfs.ko

how to disable slow repository mirror?
Using the yum-fastestmirror plugin on CentOS 5.
The mirror that gets selected seems to be always the same one, and the
particular one for my EPEL channel is slow as sin (often 30 kB/sec or
less). Ctrl-C moves to the next one which is satisfactory, but it's a
pain to have to do that every time. Is there a way to prevent a
particular mirror from being selected?

question(s) about LVM snapshots
I've recently begun to try out LVM snapshots and I have 2 things I'm
wondering about
My intention is to run backups off the snapshot. As a first
iteration, I left 15% of the disk for the snapshot LV.
1.
The HOWTO instructions suggest that the snapshot is in effect as long
as the snapshot LV exists, and use lvremove to disable the snapshot.
Is this the proper way?
2.
I chose 15%

glibc i686
Hi
I just did my first upgrade from 4 to 5 and for the most everything
looks great. Thanks for everything so far.
I did notice, that now I have glibc.i386 installed instead of
glibc.i686, arch is set to i686 and the i686 kernels did get installed.

dkms
First, I want to thank Karanbir for the centos extras repo.
I have a question about dkms.
I have several Dell PowerEdge systems with Centos 4, and kbs-CentOS-
Extras and dell-software repos enabled. Is there any possible
conflict if I allow yum to update dkms from dell-software instead of
kbs-CentOS-Extras? Currently the i386 architecture has version
2.0.11- in dell-software and 2.0.10-1
