slightly OT Win98 DNS question
I've got a W98/Samba LAN running with a 3Com OfficeConnect LANModem for shared internet access. Periodically, like every 10 minutes, it dials out, due to a DNS request for the workgroup/domain (same) name. Any fix for this? Can I just put a dummy address in all the host files? ...uot;THisbites" and the NT domain account shows in User Manager as "THisbites". Nonetheless, Samba refuses them access, and claims (on a debug level3 ) that there is no such user. Changing /etc/password to be "thisbites", i.e. all lowercase, makes it work. Linux 2.2.13 Intel samba-2.0.7pre2 will Sig11 and die on me right after processing NetBIOS name = FOO in smb.conf. Not always, but sometimes I have to start smbd 2 or 3 times. It always fails there. Any reason why 2.0.7pre2 would do this, and 2.0.6 (from rpm) never did? -- Edward Schernau http://www.schernau.com Network Architect mailto:ed@schernau.com Rational Computing Providence, RI, USA

Samba and client oplock breaks over WAN
...errors in Win98. Is there a problem with the lag of the 56k link somehow? I've seen some failed oplock breaks and a few timeouts in the logs. I can get logs if this doesnt sound like a familiar (i.e. already fixed) problem. Thanks for any help, I'm kind of in a bind here! Browsing Question Here Too!
...ear in Network Neighborhood? They all register with the samba/WINS server. "Find Computer" works, but only PCs in the local subnet are visible when you open NN. Any hints? I've tried "remote announce = 1.2.3.255/WORKGROUPNAME" for each subnet, still no dice. -- Edward Schernau http://www.schernau.com Network Architect mailto:ed@schernau.com Rational Computing Providence, RI, USA, Earth

WINS weirdness
...there anything I need to do on the client (NT PDC) side, so that they properly register with the WINS (Samba) server? Ultimately, I'd like to be able to browse the other domain/workgroups in Network Neighborhood, but at this point just being able to run User Manager will be a plus. -- Edward Schernau http://www.schernau.com Network Architect mailto:ed@schernau.com Rational Computing Providence, RI, USA

samba/nmbd BUG?
...m browseable in Network Neighborhood (browse list). This isnt happening, clients are only seeing their own domain/workgroups in Network Neighborhood. Note that server manager, user manager, etc. DO work, i.e. they show all 3 domains involved, I just can't browse. sticky bit on directories created via net neighborhood
I've set "force directory mode = 1775" in smb.conf, but when I make directories in a share through network neighborhood, I end up with 0775, i.e. user has rwx, group rwx, others rx. The sticky bit is not getting set. What am I doing wrong? thanks in advance, Ed Schernau ed@schernau.com Network Architect

W95 speed issue
Hello all, I've got a W95 box connected via crossover to a 2.2.12 RH 6.0 linux box, running 2.0.3 samba. Writes to samba from Win explorer are around 450 K/sec. Reads from samba to Windows using Explorer are around 8 K/sec. Using the smb version of tcpdump, I see between a .200 and .220 second lag between packets. smbd is nowhere near the top of my "top" list output in linux. Is
