new install hang after "setting hostname"
...er install, reboot and the box starts the graphic boot,
then hangs on "setting hostname". After a few minutes it drops out of
graphic install and the last thing on the screen is "Checking root
filesystem".
It then sets there FOREVER.
Any ideas? I have already re-installed from scatch and get the exact
same thing.

Experiences with WINS-Migration NT -> Samba ?
Hi all,
I'd like to replace an old NT-wins server by a linux box with samba and
I'm wondering how long it will take for the wins-table on the linux
machine to get filled up from scatch (the size of the net is of order
1000 machines). Does anyone have *real-life* data/experiences of such a
migration ? Any tipps or hints ?
Is there a way/tool to convert the (Windows) Wins-DB into the wins.dat
format ?

recovery system
...t to use syslinux. Is it possible to do that
using syslinux?
Do you know an easier way building such a disk than using syslinux?
Is there a way building a disk that will be able to use more than one type
network adaptors (e.g. 8139too, via-rhine and ne2k-pci) without recompiling
everything from the scatch?
Thanks in advance
Julian Picht

Testing development code?
Hi, R Core Team:
How do you test the latest changes to the core R code? Is it just
"R CMD check"? Or do you use other tools, like the perl "prove" module?
I ask, because I'm about to start developing routine testing for
other (non-R) software, for which I can't do "R CMD check", and I'd like
to know what you do.
Thanks,

weird problem - R is not finding the data for the factor level present in the data
Sorry for no code - but it's a more of a general question.
I have read in a data frame ("|"-delimited, .txt).
daily<-read.table(file="filename.txt",sep="|",header=T)
One of the variables is a factor with 110 levels:
>str(daily$dma_id)
Factor w/ 110 levels "500","501","503",...
108 levels of this factor happen to be numbers

DSE revised for R 0.90.1
A slightly revised version of my DSE package for multi-variate time series
analysis is now available at <www.bank-banque-canada.ca/pgilbert>. This
version works with R 0.90.1 (and not with R 90.0 or earlier versions). It can
also be installed with
install.packages(c("syskern", "tframe", "dse"),

RE: Error "Device 0 (vif) could not be connected"
Yes, I saw that problem and removing the vif line or changing it to vif0
fixed it for me.

zfs defragmentation via resilvering?
Hello all,
I understand that relatively high fragmentation is inherent
to ZFS due to its COW and possible intermixing of metadata
and data blocks (of which metadata path blocks are likely
to expire and get freed relatively quickly).
I believe it was sometimes implied on this list that such
fragmentation for "static" data can be currently combatted
only by zfs send-ing existing
