scandinavian letters or charset problem?
...the office has problems adding files as attachments from our Samba 3.0.2a share. The attachment file browser sees the files but fails to add them as attachments (with an error message: "valid.stf - file not found" regardless of the file name in question). I tracked this thing down to scandinavian letters (if your mail client supports it you should see these ??????) in directory names. example: g:\some-directory\some-file.png Works OK g:\scandi???\some-file.png Doesn't work. Anywhere else in Windows XP samba directories work just fine with scandinavian letters. This is...

Reading in a table with ISO-latin1 encoding in MacOS-X (Intel)
Dear colleages in R, I have earlier been working with R in Linux, where reading in a table containing Scandinavian letters ("?", "?", and "?") in the header as part of variable names has not caused any problem whatsoever. However, when trying to do the same in R running on new MacOS-X (with an Intel processor) with the same original text table does not seem to work whichever wa...

sort charcters in W2K and NT
Hello. I have a problem using sort() in windows 2000 and windows NT 4.0, running R 1.8.0 on both. I want to sort a vector of characters names, where I have used "Scandinavian" letters, like '?', '?', and '?' (for those who cannot display these letters this question seems rather meaningless, i guess). Windows 2000 sorts the vector like I am used to from other software, with '?' as the last letter in the alphabet, while windows NT h...

data frames with å, ä, and ö (=non-ASCII-characters) from windows to mac os x
Hi, I ran into this issue previously and managed to solve it, but I've forgotten how and am getting frustrated... I have a data frame (see below) with scandinavian characters in R (2.7.1) running on a Win Xp-computer. I save the data frame in an RData-file on a usb stick, and load() it in R (2.8.0) running on OS X 10.5. Now the name of the data frame and all factor labels with scandinavian characters are scrambled. How do I make R in OS X read my data frame?...

labels in a boxplot
...d==1], var1[anglo==1], var1[scand==1], var1[ceast==1], var1[seast==1]) Let's make the chart clearer and let's add meaningful labels to the x-axis. Hence, I create a new vector containing a label for each of my 5 dummies: vec <- c("Mediterranean","Anglo-Saxon","Scandinavian","Centre-East","South-East") Now the boxplot is: boxplot(var1[med==1], var1[anglo==1], var1[scand==1], var1[ceast==1], var1[seast==1], names = vec) As you can see, some of the labels disappear because of the size of the chart (I suppose). I tried to solve the problem by c...

Rsync problem / Special characters
Hi, I have not esatblished a working rsync config on my server, but have found one major problem in which i hope there is a solution to. I'm based in Norway, with scandinavian clients. Of course we use several "special characters" in our keymap, which is not supported in US keyboards etc. I know there is a better word for this, unfortunatly i can't remeber it, so i hope you get my point. The problem have been found when trying to transferr mySQL databases...

Samba, Netatalk and non-ascii filenames?
...rst has to do with deleting folders created by the other platform. I think this has to do with veto files, and haven't really treid too much, but am open to suggestions. The second which is my real problem, is how the two handle filenames with non-ascii characters. We have lot of filenames with scandinavian characters which cause problems because the Mac's and Window's machines think the same file has a different name, and can't access it properly. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to best deal with this? Thanks, Joe

support for multiple codepages at once?
I have a bunch of files on a Windows (98) machine which use different character sets. Some of the filenames have German characters in them, some French, Polish, others Scandinavian and even Korean. Everything except the Korean files seem to be correctly represented by the Windows box. I read the Samba documentation fairly thoroughly, and can see with a little foresight I can set Samba up to handle some of these character sets by defining which 'code page' to use. B...

I'm having trouble getting samba to accept the ?:? as valid chars. What I don't quite understand is why it accept all other chars except ?:?, I can use all the other Scandinavian signs, ?:? ?:? ?:? ?:?. I've explained my problem in more details at this forum: http://forums.devshed.com/showthread.php?s=aca193c4bb81b3722aa88a6f13bae371&postid=168794#post168794 Could anyone help me out here??? -------------- next part -------------- HTML attachment scrubbed and remo...

First letter in filenames missing
...the KDE environment in the Mandrake distribution. I have searched for help on the web without any luck! Does anyone have a clue as to what could be the reason for this? I have tried "preserve case", "client code age" and "character set" setting and managed to get the Scandinavian letters correct, but this does not alter the fact that the first letter in all names are missing. Any hint would be appreciated! Torben -------------- next part -------------- HTML attachment scrubbed and removed

Password authentication and character set
Hi, I've searched in the wiki and in the mailinglist archives but haven't found anything about password character sets within the dovecot authentication deamon. My problem is that we have users with passwords containing scandinavian characters (???, umlauts) and the debug log shows that different clients send the password in different charsets. The passwords are stored in a Mysql table, if that makes any difference. Outlook Express with LATIN 1 (ISO-8859-1): Nov 18 16:56:39 resilar dovecot: auth-worker(default): sql(fgr...

Pressing either Ctrl-\ of Ctrl-4 core dumps R
Thanks for these explanations - it all makes sense, that is, the default behavior for a process that does not capture SIGQUIT is to quit and perform a core dump (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unix_signal#SIGQUIT). Then the remaining question, as Luke says, is: should R handle this signal? For instance, in interactive mode, SIGQUIT could maybe bring up: Possible actions: 1: abort (with core

mgcv: inclusion of random intercept in model - based on p-value of smooth or anova?
Dear useRs, I am using mgcv version 1.7-16. When I create a model with a few non-linear terms and a random intercept for (in my case) country using s(Country,bs="re"), the representative line in my model (i.e. approximate significance of smooth terms) for the random intercept reads: edf Ref.df F p-value s(Country) 36.127 58.551 0.644

NOT EVEN ITSELF. The cool thing about the Rails demo is the guy, I think it''s that Scandinavian guy who invented Rails, is sort of playing. He says "woops" about every three seconds. He changes things in a text editor and BOOM -- the application changes. But do you remember that moment in the demo when the play turns ugly with a big ole error page? It''s when he tried to...

Clarity on using SAMBA and Mapping to a Sun Server
...you have different usernames on the PCs and the unix server then take a look at the "username map" option. See the smb.conf man page for details. OTHER CHARACTER SETS ==================== If you have problems using filenames with accented characters in them (like the German, French or Scandinavian character sets) then I recommmend you look at the "valid chars" option in smb.conf and also take a look at the validchars package in the examples directory.
