disabling lame server logging
Continuing to 'clean up' my new server by reviewing logged messages. Researching a common one: Feb 26 07:30:29 onlo named[19336]: error (unexpected RCODE SERVFAIL) resolving 'foo.com/MX/IN': 1.2.3.4#53 I get the drift that my server has been directed to a 'lame server' and logs that fact. Supposedly I am to lookup the SOA record and contact the admin to fix this.

how to prevent files and directories from being deleted?
...yable.? And believe me, word gets around quickly in IT circles.? If you can't build from source to keep from using non-standard packages, then you really shouldn't be doing whatever it is you were hired to do. This is extremely basic arithmetic here.? You don't do surgery with dirty scalpels, you don't drive without brakes, these are axiomatic just like /var/run isn't persistent.? It's been that way at least since I was in HS and college in the 80s and very very likely since the early Unix days. Honestly, I feel bad for your employer if you think this is an acceptable...

Errors in data frames from read.table
Hello, all. I am working on a project with a large (~350Mb, about 5800 rows) insurance claims dataset. It was supplied in a tilde(~)-delimited format. I imported it into a data frame in R by setting memory.limit to maximum (4Gb) for my computer and using read.table. The resulting data frame had 10 bad rows. The errors appear due to read.table missing delimiter characters, with multiple data

Installing texlive dependencies
Hello ALL! I am running Fedora 16 x86_64. Due to some dubious problems, that i couldn't resolve, with the TeXLive (2007, which is a default), I removed it. That removed R as well, and some other dependent packages. Then, I installed TeXLive 2011 from CTAN. However, when I wanted to install R, from Fedora's repositories, it asks for some TeX dependencies (for example, tex-preview,

Installation woes for rattle (and other packages)
Yesterday I wanted to try rattle on Ubuntu 9.04 Jaunty. I had (and still have) it running (though it complains on startup a bit -- I'll look into that later) on a different bootup on the same machine with 8.04 Hardy. I got an error that libglade cannot be found, and various attempts to get glade support failed. I removed and reinstalled R -- same problem. To avoid the issue of local setup
