[Jan.Tangring@et.se: spectral band replication]
...proper to adress as some kind of representative
of thge Ogg vorbis project, I dont find names on the homepage.
I am a reporter on a swedish computer magazine called Datateknik 3.0,
and I am doing a story on the swedish company Coding technologies,
who are adding its "coding enhancer" SBR (spectral band replication)
to MP3 and AAC. Thomson will demo "MP3PRO" equipment this summer.
Lars Liljeryd tells me that SBR is unique, and that it builds on
fifteen man-years of research and development.
So, unique, he says. But obvioulsy he is partial on that, cause it is
his own...

SBR
Hello,
Are there any open source project that is similar to SBR from Coding
Technologies that possibly could be used together with Ogg Vorbis?

Thanks!
Btw, have you tried using SBR-technology or similar with speech codecs? That
might be a good idea I thought.. But I don't know if it produces as good
quality with speech codecs as it does for music codecs. Do you know if there
is any open source variant of SBR?

Just a reminder to keep testing. The latest builds should be rock

We're looking for more win32 freeamp reports, and any other clients

Oh, and I stuck some silly station ids in between

Well, I don't know what SBR is, but there's something in the wideband
mode that may be similar: It's possible to encode the whole 4-8 kHz band
with just ~1-2 kbps by only encoding the (LPC) shape of the spectrum and
then just filling that band with "something that makes sense". Quality
is quite reasonable......

strange bug? with R CMD check
...for example safeBinaryRegression to safeBinaryRegress) the warning
goes away and R CMD check completes successfully. Also, regardless of
the package name, the package installs and runs as expected. I'm at a
loss trying to figure out what's going on.
To reproduce:
(1) check out the sbr package (which passes R CMD check)
svn checkout svn://svn.r-forge.r-project.org/svnroot/sbr/pkg
safeBinaryRegression
(2) replace sbr with safeBinaryRegression in DESCRIPTION and NAMESPACE
(3) run R CMD check

PlusV algorithm
Important (imho)!
I found this site in the internet:
http://www.plusv.org/
PlusV is an audio enhancement algorithm similar to SRB of Mp3Pro, but
1) better than SBR
2) Fully open-source
It seems to me wise to include PlusV into new versions of Ogg Vorbis.
P.S. what about some long-awaited features in Ogg Vorbis?
1) ability to turn off the frequency filter in the encoder (especially for high bitrates)
2) CBR encoding
Thanks and best regards.

mp3pro bitrates
Sort of off topic, but I was wondering about how the SBR data factors into
an mp3pro bitrate. If you encode a "64kbps" mp3pro stream, I'm guessing
that 64kbps would include the SBR data. So, when played in a normal MP3
player, would a 64kbps mp3pro stream actually sound worse than a 64kbps
MP3 stream?

AACplus
Sorry for the crosspost but it's relevant to Vorbis and Icecast I believe.
I'm seeing more and more streaming stations using AACplus, with many
listeners being amazed at the sound quality. Most say that a 48kb/s sounds
better than a 128kb/s MP3, which would put Ogg Vorbis at around 96kb/s IMO.
That means only half the bitrate is required in AACplus compared to Ogg
Vorbis for the same

Is one source AAC-LC (standard AAC) and the other HE-AAC v2 (AAC+)?
There are three variants of AAC:
AAC-LC
HE-AAC (= AAC-LC with SBR)
HE-AAC v2 (= HE-AAC with parametric stereo), aka AAC+
Check your encoders.
You also have to match all other settings, eg. sample rate.

time out issues with icecast2
...lly to deal with specific metadata
requirements.
There is a very high level explanation of mp3PRO at the
http://www.mp3prozone.com/basics.htm site. At the risk of being somewhat
incomplete i will add:
1) The "normal" frames in an mp3PRO file can be decoded by ordinary mpeg/mp3
code. The SBR frames will simply be thrown away. An mp3PRO file reports a
sample rate in the non-SBR frames that reflects only those non-SBR frames
and thus timing is not effected when an ordinary mp3 decoder throws them
away.
2) At low bit rates and up to about 128kbps mp3PRO files and streams in
