Packages in R & Java
Yes, lots of packages do use C/Fortran code ... it would be great if there were more packages that are "pure R" especially since the advent of S4 classes and namespaces. Is it worth suggesting that we create a designation "pure R" for packages that have no external source code and encourage more of these? Indeed, now the number of packages is so big could they be classified to

Strange error
I have been getting the following error everyonce in a while. Can someone please suggest what could be going wrong with my system? It happens about once every 3 weeks. I resolve this by rebooting my server, although I never tried to figure out what is the real problem. Sharkie 2006-05-30 16:53:49: (mod_fastcgi.c.1561) connect failed: 386 Connection refused 111 0 /tmp/site.fcgi.socket-2

"attrib +R myowndir" fails to write-protect my own dir
A trivial case: executing the following DOS command from the prompt line on a Win2K SP3: %windir%\system32\attrib.exe +R H:\dir can't set the R(eadonly) flag on my home dirs (2.2.7): drwxrwsr-x 4 me users 4096 Nov 27 17:59 . drwxr-sr-x 2 me users 4096 Nov 27 17:59 dir -r--r--r-- 1 me users 0 Nov 27 17:59 empty.txt drwxr-sr-x 2 me users 4096 Nov 27 17:27

dell says bye bye to Linux
Well. A priori. I'm a dedicated legacy OS person. I cut my teeth on command line DOS and then WIN 3.xx (these days that means WFWG 3.11). I drew the line at WIN9x. Hate that beast with a true passion, but because it is the 800 pound gorilla, I have to find some way to accomodate it in the future. So, here is the rub. Linux is a real PITA. Capital PITA. Unbelievably techie and that is bad.

smbmount - file permissions on RH7
Greetings in Christ our Saviour. I am having an enormous amount of difficulties trying to do something that should be quite easy. Obviously, I am missing something. I have read everything I can find on this, and have tried everything I can think of and more... I am trying to mount a Win98 drive on my Redhat 7.0 box. The moun...

Recommendations for Apache 2 with mod_fcgid
Hi, Have been pulling out my hair for the last few days wondering what I''m going to deploy my site onto. I currently have FreeBSD 4.7, Apache 1.3.3, PHP 4 and MySQL 4 running a year-old PHP site. Dated stuff I know! The new version of the site will be entirely Ruby on Rails, and I am wondering what order I should be doing things in terms of upgrades and installation. I want to be

[leaf-user] RE: CF Boot media creation
I'm home at last. I did a mixture of things. I downloaded DOS6.22 floppy from putergeeks.com, extracted my old syslinux 1.75 (dos version) into the same boot floppy and made my CF /dev/hda1 as suggested by Luis (Hail O King - my saviour). Lo and behold it went thro' like a hot knife thro' butter. syslinux did not complain at all. I did an xcopy /s of my D: (hard disk) to my C:(CF) and a reboot saw my machine happily boot from the CF. Now that I'm home, I'm puzzled why it did not work when my hard disk was c: and c...

Do you use R for data manipulation?
Is R an appropriate tool for data manipulation and data reshaping and data organizing? I think so but someone who recently joined our group thinks not. The new recruit believes that python or another language is a far better tool for developing data manipulation scripts that can be then used by several members of our research group. Her assessment is that R is useful only when it comes to data

Macbook for Rails Development
Hi All, I''ve finally got fed up of struggling with Windows and am on the verge of splashing out on a Macbook for Ruby/Rails development. I''ve seen DHH''s post about it on loudthinking but I wondered if anyone else has any more wisdom... Is it worth it over a powerbook? Any tips on good OSX apps for Rails dev (textmate, i know already)? Anything not working well on
