saddle points in optim
Hi,
I've been trying to use optim to minimise least squares for a
function, and then get a guess at the error using the hessian matrix
(calculated from numDeriv::hessian, which I read in some other r-help
post was meant to be more accurate than the hessian given in optim).
To get the standard error estimates, I'm calculating
sqrt(diag(solve(x))), hope that's correct.
I've found

Xorg --configure
I'm currently running Centos 8 off an SD card.
It, unlike F32, lets me use my monitor's full 1440 x 900.
Both seem to use defaults and EDID,
but F32 gets it wrong and saddles me with 640 x 480
when I can find the incantation to have it run at all.
The configuration files and directories I can find are pretty much empty.
How do I add --configure to the Xorg command line?
'Tis my understanding that would generate
a configuration file that I could port to F32.

need your consult
Dear Sir/Madam
Hi. I am a general paediatrician, and I have read *some* chapters of the
following books(1-3). I think SPSS lacks some features that may be important
in data analysis (for example: interval of correlation coefficient in
bivariate normal distribution, PRESS, and MSPR in cross-validation). I am
thinking about changing SPSS to R:
1. SPSS is very expensive for me to update.

Off topic -2 Ln Lambda and Chi square
Dear R :
Sorry for the off topic question, but does anyone know the reference for
the -2 Ln Lambda following a Chi Square distribution, please?
Possibly one of Bartlett's?
Thanks in advance!

Laura Holt

smbd reads entire directory when creating files?
Apologies if this is a FAQ.
We are saddled with some directories full of production image files that
number in the hundreds of thousands to the millions. (Yes, I know this
is bad.) They reside on a couple of Win 2003 boxes that are flaky and
unreliable. I was hoping to copy them over to a Linux box running samba
but it is taking forever.
A strace on the smbd process receiving the files

clubSandwich provides several variants of the cluster-robust variance
estimator for ordinary and weighted least squares linear regression models,
including the bias-reduced linearization estimator of Bell and McCaffrey

Models for Discrete Choice in R
Hi,
I would like to fit Logit models for ordered data, such as those
suggested by Greene (2003), p. 736.
Does anyone suggests any package in R for that?
By the way, my dependent variable is ordinal and my independent
variables are ratio/intervalar.
Thanks,
Iuri.

locfit for R 0.99.0
I've updated the locfit library, with R 0.99.0 compatability and other
changes. The new version is propagating through CRAN, or available
from my webpage, http://cm.bell-labs.com/stat/project/locfit.
Also with regard to distribution accuracy, these might be of interest -

tasbooks Sage accounting software
I have tried installing tasbooks 2 from CD and the installer ran fine but no icon or star file appeared after finishing install.
Does anyone have any idea how to get tasbooks running with crossover?
Thanks for your help.
P.S. the software is working fine with parallels. Since I am on a trial version of parallels (and crossover for that matter) I need to decide which on use in future.

nls, reach limit bounds
Hi,
I am trying to fit a 4p logistic to this data, using nls function. The function didn't freely converge; however, it converged if I put a lower and an upper bound (in algorithm port). Also, the b1.A parameter always takes value of the upper bound, which is very strange. Has anyone experienced about non-convergent of nls and how to deal with this kind of problem?
Thank you very much.

:: and ::: as .Primitives?
Hi all,
I use Luke's "::" hoisting trick often. I think it would be fantastic
if the JIT just did that for you.
The main trouble, for me, is in code I don't own. When common
Bioconductor packages are loaded many, many base functions are saddled
with this substantial dispatch and "::" overhead.
While we have the hood up, the parser could help out a bit here too.

I have been trying to to do this for a few days now. I can generate

However, I was wondering if it is possible to shade the 3d surface like a
contour plot. i.e. black for large z, white for small z, say

Some help with sudo on remote side of rsync
I have an rsync script that has worked well for me for quite a while now
rsyncing RAID volumes attached to two servers, one on our LAN and one at
our colocation facility. I have been struggling for months, however, to get
the script to run without password prompts so I can run it on cron. The
rsync script is running on the system at the colo and ?pulling? files from
the LAN system
