saddle points in optim
...s me some NaNs for errors, whereas the one from optim gets me numbers for all parameters. If I look for eigenvalues for numDeriv::hessian, I get two negative numbers (and six positive - I'm fitting to eight parameters), so does this mean that optim hasn't converged correctly, and has hit a saddle point? If so, is there any way I could assist it to find the minimum? Thanks, Jon Phillips

Xorg --configure
I'm currently running Centos 8 off an SD card. It, unlike F32, lets me use my monitor's full 1440 x 900. Both seem to use defaults and EDID, but F32 gets it wrong and saddles me with 640 x 480 when I can find the incantation to have it run at all. The configuration files and directories I can find are pretty much empty. How do I add --configure to the Xorg command line? 'Tis my understanding that would generate a configuration file that I could port to F32. --...

smbd reads entire directory when creating files?
Apologies if this is a FAQ. We are saddled with some directories full of production image files that number in the hundreds of thousands to the millions. (Yes, I know this is bad.) They reside on a couple of Win 2003 boxes that are flaky and unreliable. I was hoping to copy them over to a Linux box running samba but it is taking for...

The hypothesis tests incorporate small-sample corrections that lead to more accurate rejection rates when the number of clusters is small or the design is unbalanced/leveraged. Tests of single regression coefficients use Satterthwaite or saddle-point corrections. Tests of multiple-contrast hypotheses use an approximation to Hotelling's T-squared distribution. ...d like to fit Logit models for ordered data, such as those suggested by Greene (2003), p. 736. Does anyone suggests any package in R for that? By the way, my dependent variable is ordinal and my independent variables are ratio/intervalar. Thanks, Iuri. Greene, W. H. Econometric Analysis. Upper Saddle River, NJ: Prentice Hall, 2003

locfit for R 0.99.0
...through CRAN, or available from my webpage, http://cm.bell-labs.com/stat/project/locfit. Also with regard to distribution accuracy, these might be of interest - http://cm.bell-labs.com/stat/clive/dbinom.ps (document) http://cm.bell-labs.com/stat/clive/dbinom.c (c source code). It's using a saddle point method for dbinom() and dpois() which is much more accurate than the current R (and S-Plus) implementations for large n (no R interface yet, but that should be easy). tasbooks Sage accounting software

Thanks for your help. P.S. the software is working fine with parallels. Since I am on a trial version of parallels (and crossover for that matter) I need to decide which on use in future. I would

nls, reach limit bounds
Hi, I am trying to fit a 4p logistic to this data, using nls function. The function didn't freely converge; however, it converged if I put a lower and an upper bound (in algorithm port). Also, the b1.A parameter always takes value of the upper bound, which is very strange. Has anyone experienced about non-convergent of nls and how to deal with this kind of problem? Thank you very much.

:: and ::: as .Primitives?
Hi all, I use Luke's "::" hoisting trick often. I think it would be fantastic if the JIT just did that for you. The main trouble, for me, is in code I don't own. When common Bioconductor packages are loaded many, many base functions are saddled with this substantial dispatch and "::" overhead. While we have the hood up, the parser could help out a bit here too. It already has special cases for "::" and ":::". Currently you get the symbols "pkg" and "name" and have to go fishing in the ca...

persp plot question..
Dear All, I have been trying to to do this for a few days now. I can generate persp plot OK and can generate it in colour using the command persp(x,y,z,col=terrain.colors(20)) However, I was wondering if it is possible to shade the 3d surface like a contour plot. i.e. black for large z, white for small z, say Thanks in advance Colin
