abbreviate dataframe for Sweave output
I wanted to print the first and last rows of some dataframes in Sweave
using dots in columns to separate the two parts. Head and tail almost
work, but I have problems with factors and row names.
z<-data.frame(id=letters[1:26], x=sample(1:26,26))
rbind(head(z,3), ".", tail(z,1))

formating DVR-RW
My Centos 6 wodim tell me that it can only format DVD+RW.
I have DVD-RWs.
Even when I format a DVD-RW on my standalone DVD recorder,
wodim still will not write to it.
Is there a centos-6-useable mechanism
for formatting and writing DVD-RWs?

Equivalents of Novell ROS and RWS ?
I am setting up my first production Samba/Linux server and so far I have
not found equivalent settings for Novell's ROS and RWS flags.
I guess it's some combination of:
share modes ( "NEVER" to be turned off)
ole locking ( safe for Linux?)
blocking locks
fake oplocks ( should be off? )
locking ( "should never need to set this" )
oplocks...

Windows XP always see folder with read-only attribute set

nt acl support = No

force group = sis
When accessing any folder within this "publica" share from a windows xp
the folder's attribute "read-only" is set. Any file within this folder
has got sis:sis ownership and u+rws,g+rws permissions; besides, even if
windows says that is "read-only" I can browse inside it and create or
delete any folder or file inside it, which is right as it is not a
read-only share.
Does anyone has an idea what could be happening and how to avoid windows

CD burning issues & questions
...the CD. (I used my other, backup desktop, and it
worked fine over there - hmm....)
Then, last night, on my home desktop (64-bit), which is usually solid
as a rock, no problems whatsoever (I said "usually"), I had similar
problems, though not quite as bad. I was trying to erase some CD-RWs,
and I kept getting errors, both from k3b and cdrecord, claiming that
they could not lock the drive for exclusive access (because another
process was accessing the device). This is really annoying because
I've tried this one several CD-RWs, and they all get the same error.
Since k3b doesn'...

Unix Group Question with repect to Samba
...samba. This might
be easier to explain with an example.
Lets say I have two users
UserID: GID
UserA:Group1
UserB:Group2
etc.....
I now have an entry in /etc/group that looks like
groupdev::UserA, UserB
If I have a directory with group ownership set to "groupdev" and group mode
"rws"
UserA & UserB cannot create a file in the share on their Windows machine.
But if they connect to the Unix host, no problem.
Does Samba understand user lists for group permissioning?

FSCK?
An EXT3 filesystem technically isn't supposed to require an fsck,
correct? Well, as per my last email re: EXT3 Crash?! I ran an fsck on a
couple of my LVMs. It said they were clean, but then I decided to be
100% sure and force an fsck. Error after Error after Error after Error.
I wound up losing almost half the data on my LVM due to all the errors.
What's the real deal? Am I doing

I first thought it was a locking option and tried many variations of those, but what I have found is that if the file's access mode is 700 (User:RWX, Group:none, Everyone:none), the user cannot save the file; however if the file mode is changed to 740 (User:RWS, Group:R, Everyone:non) the user may edit/overwrite the file.
I do not have an issue editing and saving files with Notepad or Notepad++, so this may be a problem in Excel's odd behavior of creating a new file and overwriting the original. But I'm not sure how the Group mode bits affects t...
