rsync windows -> unix still hanging :(
I spent about 12 hours today writing a nice backup system based on
Mike Rubel's snapshot system; but much to my dismay, when I took it
for a test drive, I found that rsync hung on the first large directory
I tried to back up. Aiee!
A few web searches later, I realized that a lot of folks have seen this
problem. I saw one proposed fix...

workaround for HFS+'s case-insensitivity?
I am using Mike Rubel's snapshot-style rsync to do backups from my web
server (Linux) to my desktop (MacOS X). Mostly, this works great,
except where case sensitivity (or rather, HFS+'s semi-lack thereof)
causes problems.
Specifically, it seems impossible to successfully back up my Linux box's
/usr/share/terminfo, as it contains directories that differ ONLY in
case (e.g.,

good snapshot solution
Hi all,
I have installed rsync 2.5.5 as daemons on our 35 Netware servers (no 2.5.6
is yet available for Netware) and do a daily sync from a Linux Rsync client
machine with 1.2 TB disk capacity. For the moment we do a daily, weekly and
monthly backup on tape of this machine, but I'd like to replace the daily
backups by a disc-based setup. It would be good to be able to share the

file compression on target side
Hello All,
I have been using rsync to backup several filesystems by using Mike
Rubel's hard link method
(http://www.mikerubel.org/computers/rsync_snapshots/).
The problem is, I am backing up a lot of ASCII .log, csv, and .txt
files. These files are large and can range anywhere from 1GB to 30GB.
I was wondering if on the target side (the backup side), if I can use
some sort of compression. I

possibly new rsync trick: rotating snapshots
I wouldn't worry about users reading each others files, either, if you
give each his own module, password-protected.

suggest warning for nonexistant compare_dest
Hello rsync developers,
The string compare_dest (in options.c) is set whenever the --compare-dest
or --link-dest options is called. However, if the directory specified by
compare_dest does not exist, then the target files (which should have been
in compare_dest) are not found, and every transfer is a full transfer.
I can't imagine that would ever be the user's intent. Perhaps a

rsync resources list
I am just wondering what the criteria is for getting
something added to the rsync resouces page,
http://samba.anu.edu.au/rsync/resources.html.
I have recently been working on a small little
program, RSBackup, that I use to backup my computers
to each other. Limiting the concern of a hardware
failure causing me to lose any of my bits.
Basically it takes the tutorial by Mike Rubel on using

md5sum -c failing on some files after rsync backup
Hello list readers,
I am doing rsync backups based on Mike Rubels recipe
(http://www.mikerubel.org/computers/rsync_snapshots/). I am creating lvm
snapshots of partitions whose contents changes fast. In order to verify
if evyerthing went ok, I do md5sum checks on all files and everytime some
files are failing the test. Here is a list of them:

rsync snapshot problem deleting files
Well, I followed this link:
http://www.mikerubel.org/computers/rsync_snapshots/
and implemented it (with a bit of tweaking) on my home network. It is
used to make snapshots of two Windows PC's over samba. On one of the
machines (and not the other, from what I can tell) it deletes files from
the target machine for no good reason (ie. they still exist on the
source machine). Then, if I run

Differential backup
Hello,
I have got three folders:
- /home/backup/2008-10-20 - place for differential backup
- /mnt/for_backup - folder with files for backup
- /home/backup/2008-10-01 - place where the last full backup is
My question: is below command prepared correctly to make differential
backup?
rsync -avPbn --backup-dir=/home/backup/2008-10-20/ --exclude "System
Volume Information" --exclude
