Confusion regarding rsync vs. rsyncx
We currently do backup using rsync amongst Linux and Solaris machines.
Modulo an ACL issue that we had to patch, this is working extremely well.
But I want to add our OSX machines to the mix. This is, unfortunately,
leaving me confused about rsyncx.
I can do the normal thing from OSX using rsync. But the page for rsyncx
says - cryptically, in my ignorant opinion - that rsyncx adds support for
HFS+.
Is this important? More, does it make a difference if the target of the
backup is not OSX but Linux (and is therefore not running either rsync...

rsyncX hangs on Mac OS X
I am attempting to backup the Users directory on my desktop running OS
X 10.3.6. I am backing up to Jaguar Server 10.2.8. I am using RsyncX
version 2.1 on both systems. RsyncX Server is set up to run on both
systems however in this instance the Rsync client is my desktop and
server is Panther Server.
When I kick off an RsyncX session, RsyncX will run for a while, then
stop part of the way through, never completing. There does not...

The reason we took Jitterbug and faq-o-matic down is that people

HFS support (resource forks)
hi
will the official rsync version in future maybe support HFS(+)
filesystem, like rsyncx does right now? i ask because the rsyncx version
dosen't run on my linuxbox and the feature is only supported if all
systems use rsyncx.

rsync-ing on MacOS X.
Hi all,
I'm setting up a backup script for my Mac, and I'm wondering about the
rsync ability of dealing with HFS+ filesystem (resource-fork and
such...). I've searched the mailing list archive for this topic and
I've found some thread regarding it, but it's not clear to me what is
the actual situation. Is the HFS+ officially supported? Will it be in
the near future?

Feature request: Sync Mac OS resource forks and metadata on Mac OS X
I have a feature request for rsync. I tried posting it to the
FAQ-o-matic, but that system didn't seem to be accepting new
questions. I hope this is an okay list for the request--apologies if
it's misdirected.
Mac OS X provides support for the Mac file system resource forks and
mac specific metadata (e.g., creator and file type). Most Unix
applications ignore this information, but it

"Bad address" error
I'm getting a "bad address" error which is causing my rsync process to
bomb out.
I'm running RsyncX 2.1, in daemon mode on the source machine, with a
script to pull the information to the backup server. Both servers are
Xserves running OS X Server 10.2.8. Rsync target is on an Xserve RAID.
The RAID has 350GB free, so I'm not running into a disk full situation.
My command looks like:

clone. Although I haven't stress-tested the system, all looked well
(I could open Photoshop and iTunes with no problems). A similar
procedure should work to an external disk attached to the source
computer, although I haven't tested that configuration.
So why didn't I just use RsyncX ? Googling revealed some (perceived?)
compatibility issues between RsyncX and Tiger. Besides, RsyncX only
works between Macs, and I *really* want to use my 1.5TB RAID-5 Linux
box as backup target.
About the rsync -H option: there have been rumors of incompatibility
with OSX. I'll have to f...

Rsyncing Linux to OS X
...X machine. I'm aware that there are some "issues" about rsync and
certain file forks found on HFS+ filesystems, but I'm not sure that
should be stopping me from accomplishing what I want to do.
I'm using rsync 2.5.5 on both machines, but the OS X version appears to
be the RsyncX version (It says "HFS+ filesystem support for OSX (C)2002
Kevin A. Boyd", but I have no recollection of having manually installed
that version). I type in
rsync -e ssh -avz /backup/ praxis:/Volumes/Poursoi/Client1
to use SSH, archive mode and compression. The contents of /backup/ are...

link-dest doesn't seem to work properly on MacOSX
I have been trying to use rsyncx to generate a script for rotating backups
but it seems to me that the --link-dest option doesn't work properly in my
configuration. Instead of creating hard links for all unchanged files it
seems that rsync copies everything, as if --link-dest hasn't been
specificed. Can somebody clarify wh...

help please, updating rsync on OS X
Hi,
I tried using rsyncX which is a GUI front end for rsync and as it
turns out, the installer downgraded the current version from version
2.6.3 protocol version 28 to version 2.6.6 protocol version 27.
I would like to learn more about how to get a newer version of rsync
installed. Where would be a good place for a...

Local copy (root to mounted subdir) wanted - protocol error in io.c

that boot partition to the local harddrive already having many of the
files).
If someone has made a local copy like this - with or without success - I'd

After the sync operation quits, I don't see duplicate files anywhere. The
disk is full, but the sizes of my directories are what they should be.
I'm running Mac OS 10.4.8, and I've encountered the same behavior with the
bundled version 2.6.3, the version 2.6.0 binary included with rsyncx, and
the current version 2.6.9 that I downloaded and compiled today. Here's my
rsync command:

Hi
I am a rsync (on Mac OS X, RsyncX version with extended HFS+/-eahfs

external firewire volume, so that I can resume work in case of a
harddrive disaster)

accurate progress for UI
...for example,
..... 1650 of 8345 files to copy
and then later
....30 of 11345 files to copy
and eventually down to
....1 of 18000 files to copy
So I get the idea that rsync 3 is reading in "batches" or at least
doesn't give the total # of files up front (like apple rsync or rsyncx
does with a true % ) so you get what looks like an exaggerated fast
beginning on the progress bar which then slows to a crawl as it nears
the finish line.
Is there any way to get progress to give a more overall picture. I
tried --stats which didn't work at all and -v and of course --...

rsync filling up hardisk on OSX
Hello,
I am still ironing out the bugs in my rsync backup soloution. As I said
earlier I have it working working initiating from the macs to the linux
server, sortof. The sortof part is what I am trying to eliminate.
2 problems: first rsync seems to be filling up the disk on one of my
client OSX machines. df showed a little over a gigabyte when i started

RSYNC/FreeBSD/Macintosh files...
I am wanting to rsync over mac files to a freebsd 4.5 box, but have
recently found out that rsync does not preserve resource forks, or creator
types and maybe some other things. But, has anybody had any experience like
this, would tar'ing the files and then rsync'ing that seem a worthwhile
solution. There's a lot, so testing is going slowly. Thanks!
