Samba perms vs. fs perms
The subject's a little misleading really, but I was looking for some clarification of my thoughts... In Windows, one can use both share permissions and NTFS permissions to control access to files. I would normally use share permissions to control a connection (allow/deny), and use NTFS to control access. I would never use share permissions to control access whilst NTFS was capable of

Administrator doesn't have admin rights on workstation
Hello, I'm running FreeBSD-6.1, and Samba 3.0.22 with a Windows XP (SP2) client. As per subject line, administrator doesn't have administrator rights on the workstation. --- 'net groupmap list' gives, Domain Admins (S-1-5-21-3323006203-4037909810-1162086780-3003) -> ntadmins --- 'pdbedit -Lv' includes, Unix username: administrator NT username: Account

Can't connect XP to Samba domain: (user name could not be found)
I have done all I can think of to make Samba be a PDC, but I can't get my Windows XP-SP2 client to join the domain. I've already edited the Group Policy for the roaming profile thingumyjig. I am asked for the user/pass (I use root) to add the machine to the domain, and the error is: "The user name could not be found". Here's my smb.conf, and group information.

Extra inbox problem
One of my users (who uses Outlook) has lost all her folders that were inside her INBOX. She collects her mail by IMAP. I have confirmed that she has no folders in her INBOX. However, if I use Pine, I can see a couple of extra folders, "INBOX." and "Junk Email." that I don't think should be there. There already folders by that name but without the dot on the end. If

Connection closed by foreign host.
I'm writing this on behalf of someone else... They successfully setup Dovecot, and can login to Dovecot using telnet but as soon as they are logged in, they get the message "Connection closed by foreign host" and are disconnected. The user is a valid Linux user and the mail file exists under /var/mail. They say no errors are written to /var/log/maillog. # telnet localhost 110

What is the best way to provide case insensitivity?
Hello Is this still the only way to make rsync case insensitive, or is there a smarter/built-in way that I don't know about? This is only a part of a much larger include file! - *.[Gg][Ii][Dd] - *.[Ll][Nn][Kk] - *.[Oo][Ll][Dd] - *.[Tt][Ee][Mm][Pp] - *.[Tt][Mm][Pp] - [Tt][Hh][Uu][Mm][Bb][Ss].[Dd][Bb] Many thanks, Steve :)

Administrator is root - I don't like it
The "Samba-3 by Example" instructs you to make a mapping, "root = Administrator". Is this absolutely necessary? What if someone hacks a Windows machine and is able to supply Administrator credentials to Samba? Is there a way around this? I can live with having to supply root credentials in Windows when joining a Samba domain (but if there were another way I would love

FreeBSD add user script syntax
I've got Samba set up as a domain controller successfully, and am now wanting to user usrmgr.exe and svrmgr.exe to make basic user admin changes from a Windows workstation. Some stuff works, and some stuff doesn't, and I was looking for some help with the script sections listed here... What works: add user script = pw user add -n %u -g users -c "Windows User" -s

A couple of share questions...
In my smb.conf (below)... 1. I would like the ntadmins group to be able to see (and write to if necessary) all defined shares. The way I've done this is to share the root [export] of where I've put all my shares. Is that the easiest and recommended way? As it stand, members of ntadmins can connect, but not write to that location, and I think this is because /export is owned and

O'Reilly - Using Samba (3rd edition)
As the second edition is a bit long in the tooth, I wrote to O'Reilly, and they said the 3rd edition of "Using Samba" is scheduled for release in November. Steve :)

System Policy Editor not running on XP
This Samba Wiki entry: http://wiki.samba.org/index.php/Implementing_System_Policies_with_Samba ... says how to use the MS System Policy Editor, and implies it runs on XP. When I run "adminpak.msi" (extracted from Windows 2000 SP4) it says it wil l not run on this version of Windows, and if you continue to install you get a System File Protection error. Is this just the way things

Method of archiving mail?
Hello I have a situation in which a number of users have 10,000+ messages in the maildir, going back a few years. I'm not a fan of this many files lying around so I'd like to set up some kind of archiving, but one that will allow user's access to the old mails should they wish to see them. I thought of a cron job trying to sift through messages pulling those what were older than

How to join a domain without using root?
This is part of a larger post that was maybe too complicated for me to get the right answer, so I'm breaking it down and will do it bit by bit. Server is Samba-3 PDC, clients are NT4 & XP. I can join the domain using root credentials (so the add machine script works), but not when using 'administrator'. unixuser 'administrator' has primary unixgroup 'ntadmins'.

Sorting messages by date
I've recovered a load of messages from a different mail server without it's index file (it was corrupted). I now have thousands of messages which display in Outlook Express (yes, you may puke at this), all as today's date. However when I read them in Pine, the date of each message is displayed correctly, but they're in no particular order whatsoever. There are several
