cloning disk with zpool
...rongly inspired by http://www.opensolaris.org/jive/thread.jspa?messageID=135038 and http://www.opensolaris.org/os/community/zfs/boot/ But unfortunately this doesn''t work, and we do have no clue what could be wrong on c1d0 you have a zfs root create a mirror of this disk: zpool attache rootpool c1d0 c2d0 wait that it construct c2d0 zpool offline #install the grub /usr/sbin/installgrub /boot/grub/stage1 /boot/grub/stage2 c2d0 shut down remove the disk c1d0 and place the disk on c2d0 in c1d0 boot in failsafe clean the zpool zpool import rootpool zpool rootpool c1d0 #(yeah I know th...

ZFS Boot Won''t work with a straight or mirror zfsroot

Thanks and regards Kugutsumen .... This is everything I did: # root is about 350 megs ... so it should fit nicely on our flash disk. # let''s make separate partition for /, /var, /opt, /usr and /export/home # Later...

zfs boot error recovery
hi all, i would like to ask some questions regarding best practices for zfs recovery if disk errors occur. currently i have zfs boot (nv62) and the following setup: 2 si3224 controllers (each 4 sata disks) 8 sata disks, same size, same type i have two pools: a) rootpool b) datapool the rootpool is a mirrored pool, where every disk has a slice (the s0, which is 5 % of the whole disk) and this is devoted to the rootpool, just for mirroring. the rest of the disk (s1) is added to the datapool which is raidz. my idea is that if any disk is corrupt i am still be able...

ZFS Boot for Solaris SPARC
Hi, Searching this alias I can find a number of guides and scripts that describe the configuration of Solaris to boot from a ZFS rootpool. However, these guides appear to be Solaris 10 x86 specific. Is the creation of a ZFS boot disk available for Solaris SPARC ? If so, could you point me in the direction of where I can obtain details of this new feature from. Thanks and Regards, Paul. PS: Please email me direct as I am not su...

Any fix for zpool import kernel panic (reboot loop)?
My system (a laptop with ZFS root and boot, SNV 64A) on which I was trying Opensolaris now has the zpool-related kernel panic reboot loop. Booting into failsafe mode or another solaris installation and attempting: ''zpool import -F rootpool'' results in a kernel panic and reboot. A search shows this type of kernel panic has been discussed on this forum over the last year. Apparently zfs panicking on a failed write to a non-redundant pool is a known issue to be addressed (although I''m not sure if the panic I''...

Unable to allocate dma memory for extra SGL
Hi all; We have a Solaris 10 U9 x86 instance running on Silicon Mechanics / SuperMicro hardware. Occasionally under high load (ZFS scrub for example), the box becomes non-responsive (it continues to respond to ping but nothing else works -- not even the local console). Our only solution is to hard reset after which everything comes up normally. Logs are showing the following: Jan 8

Issue with adding existing EFI disks to a zpool
I spend yesterday all day evading my data of one of the Windows disks, so that I can add it to the pool. Using mount-ntfs, it''s a pain due to its slowness. But once I finished, I thought "Cool, let''s do it". So I added the disk using the zero slice notation (c0d0s0), as suggested for performance reasons. I checked the pool status and noticed however that the pool size

Why we wont use zpool ever again
Hi everyone, Just wanted to tell you a little story. We''ve been enthusiastic puppet users since about a year ago here at the Geographic Institute of the University of Zürich. But we won''t use the zpool type ever again. Its just not worth it. Here''s what happened: . one of our servers lost knowledge about one of its zfs pools . puppet didn''t find the pool

Best practice for full stystem backup - equivelent of ufsdump/ufsrestore
I''m looking for a way to backup my entire system, the rpool zfs pool to an external HDD so that it can be recovered in full if the internal HDD fails. Previously with Solaris 10 using UFS I would use ufsdump and ufsrestore, which worked so well, I was very confident with it. Now ZFS doesn''t have an exact replacement of this so I need to find a best practice to replace it.
