Suppressing row labels.
Very often when I print a data frame (particularly when sink()-ing to a file I do NOT want the row labels (which are in such cases usually 1, 2, ... nrow(x), where x is the data frame in question). I can of course edit these out ``by hand'', but that's a bit of a pain in the pohutukawa. I recently discovered (reading the help on print.data.frame meticulously, and following it through

A simple stand-alone scenario but "public" share doesn´t work
Dear list, For a simple home-network i recently installed Debian Etch on an extra machine to act as server. It stores my mail, it acts as webserver, firewall, dns-, dhcp- and database-server. All of these services are running like a charm. The only thing left is to get samba running. Well, it is running, but to get it running how i want it to is a different matter i suppose, for i am quite

Where is the tcltk package?
Perhaps I'm being even thicker than usual, but I can't find the tcltk package on CRAN. There is a tcltk2 package, which says that it is a collection of supplements to tcltk, but I cannot see a just-plain tcltk anywhere. If I try to install tcltk2 (from the Linux command line, or using install.packages() in R) it complains that it needs tcltk. If I try to install tcltk using

Problem installing rgdal on a laptop running Ubuntu 16.04.1
I previously sent a cri de coeur about this problem to the r-help list but so far have not managed to extract a solution. So I am trying here. (Uh, Ubuntu *is* a "special instance" of Debian, isn't it?) The problem is that I cannot install rgdal, and I need it. Rather desperately. I do: install.packages("rgdal",lib="/home/rolf/Rlib") and get the error

library()
I've just installed version 1.4.0 of R, and am experiencing a puzzling phenomenon with the library() function. I have .lib.loc set as follows: > .lib.loc [1] "/usr/local/lib/R/library" "/home/faculty/rolf/Rlib" If I invoke > library(melvin) I get the error message Error in library(melvin) : There is no package called `melvin' but if I invoke >

Receiving Multiple calls on asterisk at home
All - I've been muddling around with this for a few days now.. and I'm trying to figure out why I am not receiving more than one phone call on each polycom 501 phone. I can make more than one phone call out, but not receive another one in, while on a call. Has anybody seen this behaivior before, or is there something simple in the config i'm missing, like.. maxcalls.. or

Legality of copying from Splus.
A few days ago, I sent a question to the r-help list enquiring about the *** LEGALITY *** of porting a function from Splus into R. As a particular example, I referred to error.bar. Several people posted code for various versions of error.bar which they had written, but that was NOT WHAT I WAS ASKING FOR/ABOUT!!! [Can't anybody ***read*** these days?] I asked: IS IT

Hmisc?
I was looking for an R function to turn a matrix into a LaTeX table; did an R site search using Jon Barron's machine and turned up the latex() function in the Hmisc package. But the Hmisc package is an Splus package, and appears not to be available for R --- there is no hint of it in the list of contributed packages on CRAN. I had a look at the Hmisc package (via statlib) and there was no

New utility: sas2r
Dear R users, Biostatistics Denmark would like to annouce the availability of the new utility: sas2R --- a SAS to R parser. For almost 40 years SAS has been the primary tool for statisticians worldwide and its easy-to-learn syntax, unsurpassed graphical system, powerful macro language and recent graphical user interfaces have made SAS the number one statistical software choice for both beginners

Mail server problem?
I keep getting repeated copies of ``R-help post acknowledgements'' in respect of a couple of postings that I made to the list this morning (my time). I only posted each posting *once*. I hope that others are not getting repeated copies of my postings .... I mean I *know* my postings are so wonderful they merit re-reading, but one does not need another copy in order to re-read! :-)

Off topic --- help in locating a source.
Apologies for the off-topic question; as usual I'm trying to draw upon the unparalleled knowledge and sagacity of the r-help list. Please reply off-list if you can help me out. A collaborator of mine found a formula we need, on sheets which he had photocopied out of a book, some years ago. He cannot remember which book (he's getting to be as senile and forgetful as I am, poor bloke!).

OT: P(Z <= -1.46).
In checking over the solutions to some homework that I had assigned I observed the fact that in R (version 2.4.0) pnorm(-1.46) gives 0.07214504. The tables in the text book that I am using for the course give the probability as 0.0722. Fascinated, I scanned through 5 or 6 other text books (amongst the dozens of freebies from publishers that lurk on my shelf) and found that some agree with R

Local library under Windoze.
Continuing to try to customize my environment for using R under Windoze, I experimented with installing a package from CRAN in a local library ``Lib''. I created the directory ``Lib'' in the folder in which R starts, and then executed > install.packages("abind",lib="Lib") Everything went according to form (I got prompted to choose a mirror, etc.) until
