pool space reservation
What is a use case of setting a reservation on the base pool object? Say I have a pool of 3 100GB drives dynamic striped (pool size of 300GB), and I set the reservation to 200GB. I don''t see any commands that let me ever reduce a pool''s size, so how is the 200GB reservation used? Related question: is there a plan in the future to allow me to replace the 3 100GB drives with 2

Zfs best practice for 2U SATA iSCSI NAS
Is there a best practice guide for using zfs as a basic rackable small storage solution? I''m considering zfs with a 2U 12 disk Xeon based server system vs something like a second hand FAS250. Target enviroment is mixature of Xen or VI hosts via iSCSI and nfs/cifs. Being able to take snapshots of running (or maybe paused) xen iscsi vols and re-export then for cloning and remote backup

3510 configuration for ZFS
hi all, I am hoping to move roughly 1TB of maildir format email to ZFS, but I am unsure of what the most appropriate disk configuration on a 3510 would be. based on the desired level of redundancy and usable space, my thought was to create a pool consisting of 2x RAID-Z vdevs (either double parity, or single parity with two hot-spares). using 300GB drives this would give roughly 2.4TB of usable

ZFS checksum error detection
Hi all. A quick question about the checksum error detection routines in ZFS. Surely ZFS can decide about checksum errors in a redundant environment but what about an non-redundant one? We connected a single RAID5 array to a v440 as a NFS server and while doing backups and the like we see the "zpool status -v" checksum error counters increment once in a while. Nevertheless the

Which label a ZFS/ZPOOL device has ? VTOC or EFI ?
Hi All, ZPOOL / ZFS commands writes EFI label on a device if we create ZPOOL/ZFS fs on it. Is it true ? I formatted a device with VTOC lable and I created a ZFS file system on it. Now which label the ZFS device has ? is it old VTOC or EFI ? After creating the ZFS file system on a VTOC labeled disk, I am seeing the following warning messages. Feb 3 07:47:00 scoobyb

ZFS throttling - how does it work?
Hi zfs-discuss, I have some questions about throttling on ZFS 1) I know that throttling is activating while one sync is waiting for another. (http://blogs.sun.com/roller/page/roch?entry=the_dynamics_of_zfs) Is it possible to throttle only selected processes (e.g. nfsd) ? 2) How can I obtain some statistics about it? I want to know how often throttling is activating on my host etc. 3) Is it

restore lost pool after vtoc re-label
hi all, i''ve been using a SAN LUN as the sole member of a zpool with one additional zfs filesystem. this is a flat SAN fabric, so this LUN was available to other systems on the fabric, and one of them came up with "wrong magic number" for several drives, and, as best i can tell, the vtoc for my zpool LUN was over-written on that host via format labeling to correct the error.

storage type for ZFS
The paragraph below is from ZFS admin guide Traditional Volume Management As described in ?ZFS Pooled Storage? on page 18, ZFS eliminates the need for a separate volume manager. ZFS operates on raw devices, so it is possible to create a storage pool comprised of logical volumes, either software or hardware. This configuration is not recommended, as ZFS works best when it uses raw physical

Re: Difference between ZFS and UFS with one LUN froma SAN
This may not be the answer you''re looking for, but I don''t know if it''s something you''ve thought of. If you''re pulling a LUN from an expensive array, with multiple HBA''s in the system, why not run mpxio? If you ARE running mpxio, there shouldn''t be an issue with a path dropping. I have the setup above in my test lab and pull cables

zfs destroy - destroying a snapshot
...n snapshot is provided as an argument zfs destroy wouldn''t actually destroy it. That way it would be much safer to write scripts. What do you think? I can implement it and send diffs - should be really simple. -- Best regards, Robert mailto:rmilkowski at task.gda.pl http://milek.blogspot.com
