BUG: atan(1i) / 5 = NaN+Infi ?
...s not live in the extended real line. (I'm not digging into bit patterns here. I suspect that there are several versions of NaN, but I hope that they all behave the same way.) The documentation suggests that a complex scalar in R is just a pair of numeric scalars, so we are not dealing with the Riemann sphere or any other usually-studied extension of the complex plane. Since R distinguishes various complex infinities (and seems to allow any combination of numeric values in real & imaginary parts), the usual mathematical answer for atan(1i) may no longer be relevant. The tangent function has...

Migrating from mbox to maildir, which converter is compatible with dovecot
Hi, I'm testing/debuging the migration from mbox to maildir in a mailserver running Dovecot 1.0alpha5. I migrated all 472715 emails(in a test server) and later noted that dovecot could not get the same flags/status of the emails as in the mbox. I was using perfect_maildir.pl and I think its not dovecot fault. Seems to me that perfect_maildir.pl convert the emails in a way that dovecot could

besselK
Assistance, besselK- complex number problem Im a student intrested in using R in my learning and research work in option pricing however i have a problem with besselK function In R. Would you assit me in computing the besselK of third kind of a complex number in R. Any code or suggestion will be highly appriceiated eg besselK(2,10) works well.. but besselK(2,10i) doesnt work !! im

Is this a bug (or a feature) in hist(x)$density ??
Hi all, A friend send me a question on why does this: x<-rpois(100,1) sum( hist(x)$density ) Gives out "2" I tried this: sum( hist(x, freq =T)$density ) It didn't help. Then he came back with the following insight: # with breaks b<-c(0,0.9,1:8) sum(hist(x,breaks=b)$density) # Much more then 2 # but if we add weights according to the interval length

Multivariate linear regression
Hi, I am working on a multivariate linear regression of the form y = Ax. I am seeing a great dispersion of y w.r.t x. For example, the correlations between y and x are very small, even after using some typical transformations like log, power. I tried with simple linear regression, robust regression and ace and avas package in R (or splus). I didn't see an improvement in the fit and

Question about histogram
Dear list, I'm new to R, please bear with my silly questions. I'm trying to get an understanding of why the results I get from a call to hist() are not as I thought I would get. When I use the parameter freq=FALSE, I think the plot will contain bars that none of them is larger than 1, because they're probabilities. But for my code, the bars exceeded 1. The actual data seems

density() returns a density function that does not add up to 1
Dear R users, I ran into this curious problem: > d <- rnorm(100) > d.density <- density(d) > sum( d.density$x * d.density$y) [1] 2.517502 Admittedly the method of computing the mass under the density curve at line 3 is crude. But 2.5 is pretty far from 1, the value it should be. I tried a few other dataset and got similar result. Am I missing something obvious? Or is the return
