When to stub/when to mock (was Rails functional testing and Mocha)
...necessary but uninteresting (from the perspective of the tests) out of the way of the test methods, which can focus entirely on the interesting bits. The motivation is the same as Nat Pryce''s - expecting only the interesting bits will make tests less brittle - but the resulting principle revolves on a different axis. Thoughts on this? Cheers, David

search without flush.
Hi, Is it possible to perform a search without flushing the index? I've got an application that updates the index every 4 hours but I need to be able to search the new data fairly quickly after the index is updated. The problem revolves around the fact that the update is often much less than 10 000 documents so it isn't being flushed until quite a bit latter. I realise I can do a flush after the documents have been updated but I was trying to avoid the flush. Is there a way of running a search after I've called add_docume...

OpenPVN authentication via Samba AD
A little off topic, but this does revolve around Samaba. I'm hoping someone can help me get to a working aolution. I haven't been able to find a clear quide, but it must have been done by others. I'm trying to use setup a VPN using OpenVPN on Pfsense with authentication via my Samba AD (Version 4.9.4-Debian) I keep getting a "Could not connect to LDAP server" error when

Maildir, INDEX, and folders
I'm reading the wiki et el. regarding indexes, but can't come up with a coherent answer to the setup and what will happen. I want to take the indexes and move them off of NFS (~/Maildir) and place in /var/spool/dovecot/indexes, but not have to hand create everything (user homes, mail folders) So, I create a parent folder /var/spool/dovecot/indexes that has the appropriate permissions

URGENT: libdvdcss install hosed /var
I am running CentOS 5/2 (latest updates) with the GNOME DE on a 32-bit machine (at work). I have k3b installed, and I was trying to copy a DVD earlier this morning, but k3b said it couldn't read encrypted DVDs. So, I installed libdvdcss from rpmforge and restarted k3b. It hung the system. I rebooted, and / had been damaged. After running e2fsck from the repair prompt, I rebooted and a

sendmail and spamassassin
I have a problem getting spamd and sendmail (both stock CentOS4 rpms) to work together on a couple of smtp relay machines. This is clearly a configuration issue and no doubt revolves around my lack of comprehension of how this is to work. Basically, the setup consists of two frontend public smtp transports that redirect all email through a firewall to an internal imap server for final delivery. The firewall and sendmail access map prohibit connections to the imap server e...

plugin, acts_as_modified 1.1.2
After a couple of thoughtful comments, I''ve made changes to acts_as_modified plugin. It no longer relies on after_find and after_initialize, which were both causing performance issues. Please check it out and let me know what you think, where you might recommend improvements or additional features and what not. One feature I do have planned (again, thanks to comments), but

[2.5.2p1] openbsd-compat/glob.c: ARG_MAX not defined, alternative
Hi. On sparc-sun-sunos4.1.4 (i.e., -DSUNOS4), ARG_MAX is not defined anywhere, although <sys/limits.h> has the following line: #define _POSIX_ARG_MAX 4096 This is more a minimum imposed by POSIX than anything else. The proper solution revolves around this: ======================================================================== bash$ cat > x.c #include <unistd.h> #include <stdio.h> int main(int argc, char **argv) { printf("%ld\n", sysconf(_SC_ARG_MAX)); return 0; } ^D bash$ gcc -o x x.c bash$ ....

Options in Brazil
...to plan sitting in Chicago, USA. I know there is a large section of Brazillian Asterisk users who actively read this list- so I'd love to pump out a few questions- note, I'm not necessarily a newbie, having successfully implemented a few Asterisk boxes here in the US. My primary question revolves around connection hardware- I need to plug in 8 POTS lines (I've no idea what they'd be called there) to an Asterisk box. Is digium's TDM400 series availble down there? Recommended? Undesirable? ATA's? (Sipura, presumably) - channel banks? If anyone has any solid knowledge they...

Linux vs NT: a new test
Don't know how many ppl saw/read the following: http://www.zdnet.com/pcweek/stories/news/0,4153,1015266,00.html One of the comments on Slashdot was the question as to how well 4.4lite would have done in the same tests, as they "theorize" that alot of the problems revolve around Linux's IP stack... Now if only we had a working MMAP, we'd be all set... Marc G. Fournier

Directory routing to wrong extension if dial tones are pressed too quick.
Hi All, Have completely moved off the old ESI system, and things have been going pretty good with the new server. I have one issue, which has been reported by several of our customers. I've tested it, and it does indeed seem to be a problem. When the customer is asked to dial in the first three letters of the person they are trying to reach, they will be routed to the wrong extension.

ACL Win XP problem
Ok, I've been searching Google for two days and can't seem to find an answer for this. I want to use ACL's, but I need to be able to administer them in Win XP. My distro is Suse 9.1 and I'm running a standalone Samba server. I can create acl's just fine in Linux/shell, and when I view a file in the Security tab I can see and edit all the ACL parameter's just fine.

CentOS Repo Questions (and Samba)
Hello, I have two questions which are really CentOS repository related, but they primarily revolve around the Samba packages available. 1) Why is the s390 architecture version of Samba for CentOS 4 so much more up to date than the i386 architecture version? If you open these two links in a browser window... http://isoredirect.centos.org/centos/4/updates/i386/RPMS/

New R-SIG for Discrete Choice Modelling
Hello all, I'd like to announce the availability of a mailing list for a newly-formed SIG (Special Interest Group) dedicated to using R for Discrete Choice Modelling. This list is intended for discussion of issues revolving around the design and analysis of Discrete Choice (aka Stated Choice, Stated Preference or Choice-Based Conjoint) experiments. While R has good infrastructure for

Amateur Radio/FCC and the "none" encryption option
Is there an easy way to get the "none" option back into OpenSSH? In order to do TCP/IP over amateur radio in the U.S. (and most other countries) we must not use encryption to obscure the meaning of our info, but we are allowed to use authentication to set up the links. This means we need normal authentication but we need the "none" option back in OpenSSH in order to use it

Constrained non-linear optimisation
I'm relatively new to R, but I'm attempting to do a non-linear maximum likelihood estimation (mle) in R, with the added problem that I have a non-linear constraint. The basic problem is linear in the parameters (a_i) and has only one non-linear component, b, with the problem being linear when b = 0 and non-linear otherwise. Furthermore, f(a_i) <= b <= g(a_i) for some (simple) f

Install problems (group permissions) with nut 2.7.2
Hmmm...well, let's put it this way. I'm trying to do the "right" thing in regards to permissions and access for running NUT and everything involved with it. I note in the installation instructions it says that if you're impatient and want to try starting upsd, upsmon, and drivers right now, you can use "-u root", but that you should set the correct permissions
