Questions on the state of the UPS market
...n fact dead as a technical category? If not, why not?
Oh, and this, too:
1c: RS232C, on consumer devices, in 2009? Ferfuckssake, *why*?
It's not like USB chips are expensive or anything. I know all about
this from GPS-land, actually; pl2303s are so cheap that even if the
vendors wanted to retread their RS232 designs, the cost of goods to
refit them with USB-to-serial conversion is close to zip. Does anyone
have a clue why this interface type didn't die five years ago?

Dial, RING with a digit interrupt
This is a new post, but its really a three-time retread. I hope someone has a clue on this, as it could be helpful in many circumstances:
I am looking for a way to dial 'special' an extension (in house, like 102), which are all Polycom IP. I'd like to ring the extension as normal, but have the option of, while the line is ringing, to pres...

Problems sharing HP Officejet 6210 Linux --> XP
[cross-posted from www.tek-tips.com]
Dear samba forum,
I've now wasted most of a weekend on this issue, so now it's time to swallow
my pride and ask for help!
Background:
My main home computer died. I can't afford to replace it right now, so I'm
attempting to retread an old AMD PC into a linux print/file server. Clients
are a mixed bag of Windows XP home/professional PCs. The printer is an HP
Officejet 6210 multifunction print/scan/fax. I'm only attempting to get
basic printing working between Windows/Linux.
File shares to the PCs are working great. The pr...

draft-miller-ssh-agent-02: extensions and success messages
...have to change their
parsing of the success message dramatically after sending each extension
request message (and will have to track which ext they last sent etc),
since it doesn't include enough information in the message itself any
more to figure out what it should contain.
Sorry if I'm retreading on a discussion that's already been had (I did
search this list but couldn't find anything)
Thanks!

[Fwd: Re: Regarding non-streaming Ogg]
[pardon me if this retreads some ground, but I'm just getting up to speed on this issue]
so am I to understand --
application/ogg is for downloading, and will invoke an app that supposedly can parse *any* ogg file --
audio/vorbis is for streaming -- but this is narrowly defined as vorbis audio only. Presumably the thi...

software raid - better management advice needed
Hi,
I've used mdadm for years now to manage software raids.
The task of using fdisk to first create partitions on a spare drive
sitting on a shelf (raid 0 were my 1st of 2 drives failed) is kind of
bugging me now.
After using fdisk to create the same partition layout on the new drive
as is on the existing drive and then using mdadm to finish every thing
up is a little tedious.
