Hardware for a new Workstation for best performance using R
Hi,
we are looking for a new workstation for big datasets/applications (easily
up to 100'000 records and up to 300 Variables) using R. As an example:
Variable Selection for a multivariate regression using stepAIC.
What is the best configuration for a workstation to reach a high performance
level for computing with R?
Single core or multi core (is R together with nws package really able to

Dovecot user lookup from sendmail
...ve me some hints on what I'm doing
wrong, or where to look ...
I have an ancient customer box with sendmail & cyrus imap, with imap
using an LDAP database of users (no locally configured users), all of
which is working fine.
This machine needs to be replaced by a new installation, which -
regrettably - is supposed to use SLES 12. Which does not have any Cyrus
IMAP packages available anymore, so I had to use the Dovecot imap
instead. I've already got the LDAP auth working, as well as the imap
storage of mails (used imapsync to copy all of the old mailboxes to the
new machine), everything...

Re: unable to dissect libvirt rpc packets using wireshark plugin
Hi Michal,
Thank you for your suggestion. My apologies that I took sometime to get back
on further confirmation. Regrettably, my tshark is still unable to find
libvirt payload
inside packet capture, though it lists libvirt as a possible filter.

In the common case, for most targets LLVM supports I think you're right,
but for my case, regrettably, not. Because my target is a Harvard
Architecture, any code address can have the same ordinal value as any
data address: the code and data reside on different buses so the whole
4GiB space is available to both code, and data. `DW_AT_low_pc` and
`DW_AT_high_pc` can be used to find the range of t...

Theora support in MPLAYER again
...rst broken revision is 31225
> Not a bug in MPlayer. Fixed in FFmpeg SVN r25052
This one is fixed in 32492 from 2010-10-14 ... but
I recently made another shocker discovery: there is a MPLAYER binary
from 2008 having the Offset-BUG
http://bugzilla.mplayerhq.hu/show_bug.cgi?id=1492 NEW
fixed. Regrettably I don't have the patch nor source code and most
likely it is not available anywhere.
This old binary suffers from several other known Ogg / Theora issues, though.

Checking packages with address sanitizer
I was recently challenged to correct my package source (rbamtools) because
there were issues reported by address sanitizer.
Therefore the problem of installing and running instrumented (R +) package
code arises.
Regrettably up to now, I found no way to use the address sanitizer, neither
for a small C-example nor for a new compiled version of R.
I get missing `__asan_report_store4' or `__asan_report_load4' messages.
I'm working on Ubuntu 13.10 and tried gcc (4.8.1) and clang (3.2-7ubuntu1,
based on LLV...

I didn't see any hostility to any field. Bert, like many of us, objects
to people blithely and arrogantly applying possibly deep statistical
techniques of which they apparently have little understanding, with an
attitude of "Oh, it's just statistics. How h...

hello and question on Mac OS X Server use of Samba
...izes the built-in Samba to allow for
Windows client connectivity. The OSXS gets the majority of its users
from an LDAP server elsewhere on the campus.
On OSXS, it's expected that the Windows users will be local or that
the server will be a KDC or that the server will be bound to an AD.
Regrettably, my server is not bound not an AD, nor is it a Kerberos
KDC for the University and the users are not local but from the
campus-wide LDAP server.
The only option I can think of for Windows clients to use Samba is to
re-kerberize the Samba service itself to the University KDC. I can
get...

Today I downgraded from Ubuntu''s APT repo "oneiric-proposed" (which
brings some kernel 3.0.0-13) back to the standard repo "oneiric".
Now I''m not able to mount my btrfs / and /home (both on the same

IvyGIS --- Rails Engine for custom maps.
...two ways to get the
code right now. One is a tar file containing the engine and nothing
but the engine; that''s here:
http://ivygis.justec.co.in/downloads.html
That requires you to have Postgresql, PostGIS, Mapserver, Ruby
Mapscript, and all their dependencies installed --- which can,
regrettably be a real pain in the neck. So, the quickest way to try
it out might be to use a FOSS GIS suite package which rolls up the
engine, the demo apps, Ruby Mapscript, and Rails 1.1.2 into an
all-in-one "instant IvyGIS" package --- instructions for installing
that are here:

As I think more of it, with the information you provided, the NUT
approach is better as it allows for unattended restart of the machines
regardless of downtime (well unless it exceeds the battery life).
Regrettably the fact that M2 is suspended when I don't use it, is
incompatible with that approach and not using suspend on M2 would mean
starting up everything on M2 at least once per day.
Do you know whether ups.delay.shutdown -1 or ups.timer.reboot -1
neutralize it? Or I will have to trial &...
