Seperating Forground from Background
One thing I have noticed when encoding VCDs is that often videos with
complex backgrounds don't compress nearly as well as those with simple
ones. Part of the problem is that TV cameras seam to have the focus so
that the entire image is clear rather than focusing on the foreground (and
blurring the backgrounds). The result is that a good number of bits are
wasted trying to perfectly

OT: Latest Linux Real player
Hi:
I know this is off-topic, but figured someone here would know, particularly
given Xiph's involvement in Helix.
Up till now I've used TRplayer <http://linux-speakup.org/trplayer.html> to
play Realmedia content. This is because, as a Blind person, I've no need
or desire for X11, and TRplayer uses the Realplayer libs without all that X
overhead. but now I would like to play

Slowdown on lots of motion
I'm playing the "Honey" movie (both Honey-small and Honey-large) and I notice
significant slowdown during periods of lots of motion (when the camera shakes,
when the first man hops into bed, when people turn around and approach the
camera, etc.). The audio plays smoothly all the time but when there is a lot
of motion, the picture freezes and resumes when there's less motion.

new MS codecs
...nificant quality improvements. Near CD-quality
audio is now available at 48Kbps, beating Microsoft’s
previous 64Kbps rate. For video, “near VHS” is
available at 250Kbps, while “near DVD” is at 500Kbps.
The quest for higher quality audio and video is
growing rapidly. In May, RealNetworks announced
RealVideo 8, which it claims can show VHS quality
video at about 300Kbps. More recently, it announced
RealAudio 8, which provides CD quality audio at 64Kbps
– half the size of MP3. However, Microsoft now has the
upper hand, with its announcement that it will support
CD quality audio at 48Kbps. Windows Media...

OT: Latest Linux Real player
Hello. Does the latest Linux real player support RealAudio 10? The RealVideo
codec is available as a upgrade but does it include RealAudio10. As far as I
know TRPlayer uses the installed Real libraries so it should work if
RealPlayer supports it.
Also would you mind sending me your compile of TRPlayer? I had some problems
compiling it under Redhat 9.
All the best

Video codec
Hi,
I guess this is a good time to start putting together a wish list for a
video codec.
I see that for audio the compression is around 10X for reasonable quality.
I am sure this will start its own thread of conversation.
For video you can do 40X fairly easily and the big task is to go to 80X or
100X with reasonable picture quality, say, a peak luma SNR of more than 30
dB. Uncompressed

Analogue artifact estimation
Hi List,
Just batting a few ideas around here, but would it be possible to include in to the codec, estimation for common video artifacts that occur in the analogue world?
For example, anything that's gone through a composite stage will likely have dot-crawl and false colour - if we can recognise this effect in the encoder, we can treat it as a special case.
Other artifacts that come to
