Encrypted partition short howto
I've written a short howto on creating and mounting an encrypted
filesystem using dm-crypt. The doc currently lives on our internal
wiki (Trac) at work, but I'd love to rewrite and post for a general
readership. I suppose the proposed URL would be something like

I would like to create a Samba share supporting named writers, named readers, and no guests ...
...rectory permissions are set so that the three writers are all in the
"writers" group, so the share ends up containing files owned by the various
three writers, who can all modify each others files (group privs are
read/write), and the file and directory permissions grant "world"
readership.
I want it to allow the three named writers to write, and other Samba users
to list directories and read files only. I want other people on the network
- people with no valid Samba account at all - to have no access at all.

Migrating R packages from svn/R-Forge to git/Github
[I'm not sure if this post should go to R-devel, but thought I'd start
here for wider readership.]
I have a collection of R packages that I maintain using the
eclipse/StatET IDE
(mainly on Windows) with SVN on the R-Forge system,
https://r-forge.r-project.org/users/friendly/
I'd like to consider moving these to git projects on GitHub, but I'm not
sure how best to get started. I...

LSUB "" "" vs LIST "" "" (hacked Apple Mail problem)
...ot; as a delimiter, which means that trying to
access a subfolder only results in an "Invalid mailbox name" error.
While this isn't really a bug in Dovecot, it's not inconceivable that
other people than me could be affected by this problem
(macosxhints.com has a substantial readership). It's also tricky to
diagnose, especially since the "Invalid mailbox name" message doesn't
include the invalid mailbox name, so any bug reports you get are
likely to eventually be filed under "crazy [Mac] users".
In fact, while Googling to figure out why Dovecot...

Naming join models
I''ve been playing around with EdgeRails and checking out some of the
new features. The one that will probably have the biggest affect on
my designs is join models (or :through associations). For those not
familiar with this feature, it lets you replace your habtm
association with a pair of has_many associations indirected through
an intermediate model class.
Looks like good

Calculating sum of squares deviation between 2 similar matrices
...data I'm not sure
that apply would work well here, that is why I was using a for loop.
The (highly inefficient) code I was using is below if that helps at all.
I give you permission to laugh if you want. I'm not remotely close to a
programmer.
Are there any suggestions from the general readership? I'm using the 1.9.0
on Windows XP with 1GB of RAM.
Thanks for your attention,

Fwd: WHO Anthro growth curve macros and R
Hi all,
some years ago, I sent a question to the mailing list regarding the WHO
anthro macros. Since I've now received three mails asking how I solved it, I
thought I'd cc R-help in for future reference. Attaching a zip file
with the relevant code parts that
I used that I'm not sure gets through (if anyone has recommendations on how
to manage such files for the list, I'd be

Guide to getting started with Asterisk on MacOSX
...Some sections are still incomplete, still working on them.
Note that this is based on using the various GUI tools we
released, so there is intentionally nothing about
configuration files nor CLI commands and it should stay
this way.
In other words, this is less interesting for the Asterisk
savvy readership of this list, but it will be helpful for
newcomers searching the archives.
Also, you may want to use this as a pointer to give to the
kind of newbie user who is too busy to learn Asterisk.

Thanks to all the donors who contributed to allow me to purchase the

I believe the general guidelines for what goes in r-help and what in
r-devel are clear enough without actively discouraging discussion of
classes and methods. It's the nature of the question, not a litmus test

Post hoc analysis for ANOVA with repeated measures
Dear all,
how can I perform a post hoc analysis for ANOVA with repeated measures (in
presence of a balanced design)?
I am not able to find a good example over internet in R...is there among you
someone so kind to give
me an hint with a R example please?
For example, the aov result of my analysis says that there is a statistical
difference between stimuli (there are 7 different stimuli).

Help on adding a negative binomial density plot
Dear David,
thanks ever so much for your answer.
Do you mean predicting the original values based on the fitted model and then comparing observed vs. predicted by, for example, a scatterplot?
Thanks,
David

Mixing html tags and Ruby blocks
I''m trying to get the following idea to work:

Essentially I want to display a form that has a left and right TD, with
the left TD being a column name and the right TD being the column data.
If there''s a better way (the Rails way ?), I''m all ears

RedHat forks OpenSSH?
It has just come to my notice that Redhat is planning to ship a
forked version of OpenSSH. The change goes beyond the usual
patches applied to RPMs in the build process: Redhat have built
their own OpenSSH tarball and are using that in their source RPM
instead of the official release distribution. If you are
interested, have a look at the openssh-3.9p1-7.src.rpm from the

Once again, you are over-writing your variable. This time, you are overwriting
the entirety of Stand_Height with the timeseries of height.
Perhaps you should spend some time with one of the good introductory R
resources out there, and think a bit more about your procedure.

But later when ran the code again I always got the following error: Error: could not find function "process.capability.sixpack". I tried reinstalling the qcc package but didn't help. Does anyone have this kind of experience? Thank you!

Drought severity index: Excel to R
Dear all,
I'm trying to make an R code for the drought severity index (DSI)
developed by Philips and McGregor (1998). You can refer to the
description of the algorithm on page 19 from
http://dissertations.port.ac.uk/229/01/MaloneS.pdf
The code is given in Excel as the following and can be found on page 60
from the same link.
