strange slowness of plot
...alt-del does nothing. Even pushing the power button does
nothing. I originally attempted the lty=2 plot with several hundred
thousand observations. The only way I could get my machine back was to
disconnect the power cord!
My system is as follows:
(1) IBM Intellistation with PIII 1GHz, 512Mb of RDRAM, 20Gb SCSI160 drive,
64Mb FireGL graphics card
(2) Windows 2000 Pro
(3) R-1.3.0 (original version)

smbfs + wine + sourcesafe = slow
...rmance leaves a lot to be desired.
I am using Sourcesafe with Wine (my setup is documented at
http://www.kegel.com/linux/vss-howto.html ).
The Wine I'm using is from CVS as of last week.
My workstation is a dual Pentium Xeon 1400MHz from Dell
running 2.4.10. (That's a Pentium 4 Xeon using RDRAM,
so it's probably about comparable to a Penium 3 1 GHz.)
Sourcesafe on this machine is just barely usable for large
recursive get's of 2000 or so files; it seems to average
about one file per second.
There is a several second pause each time it hits a new directory,
after which several f...

MKL seems to beat ATLAS, but some problems... (was RE: linkin g R against MKL)
...0.12 0.72
ATLAS321 10000 0.37 2.83 6.12
MKL51 10000 0.28 2.77 6.08
ATLAS321 1e+05 3.76 33.48 53.7
MKL51 1e+05 2.76 27.23 47.26
So it does seem to provide some modest improvement over ATLAS, at least on
this particular machine (dual P3-866 Xeon with 2GB RDRAM).

7777 (simulate incoming call) not working
I'm setting up a new AAH 1.0 box to replace my AAH 0.6 box. Though on the
new box, I've installed a generic ebay X100P. I don't have my livevoip or
voicepulse accounts set up yet on the new box (can both boxes be registered
at the same time?). I've set up one IP phone (SPA841) with the new box. I
have my SBC POTS line plugged into the fxo card. I set up everything in
AMP.

question about Rpvm, SNOW, etc.
Dear R-devel,
Inspired by Michael Li's talk at JSM, I decided to try rpvm and snow on our
two linux boxes. It only took me a couple of hours of screwing around to
get it working (sooner if I had RTFM).
Our setup is: 2 dual PIII-866 Xeons, one with 2GB RDRAM, the other with
1.28GB RDRAM. The first machine is acting as the NIS/NFS server. both /usr
and /home are exported to the second machine, so both are seeing the same
copy of R.
I managed to get the following, using the same example that Prof. Tierney
used:

Trying to figure out why my Cruzer Micro 512"MB" won't boot.
Office Depot ran a deal with a Cruzer Micro 512MB (actually, around
488MiB) for about $20 after a rebate I may not see for months. I saw
the ad yesterday and stopped by pretty well first thing this afternoon
to snatch one up while they were still there since I've been having to
make do with two 256MB drives to hold all the data I neded since one
drive couldn't hold enough (though I must

CentOS 4 and Intel D965 motherboards
Does anyone have information on support for Intel D965-based motherboards for
CentOS 4 (i386)?
I've got a DG965RYCK that fails a CentOS 4.4 install early on (problems
scanning the PCI bus). Fedora Core 6 installs just fine.
If anyone has any information, or magic boot parameters to try, please let me
know. ("Works for me" is OK too).
Thanks much.

Number of listeners per server box ?
I have a proposal from RackSpace to put icecast on the following
hardware at their server farm. Can someone give me a "guesstimate" of
how many listeners each box can support?
Proposed hardware by RackSpace for each server box:
Dual 866 MHz processor
2 GB ECC RAM
100 Mbps connection
I need to know how many listeners can connect to each of these boxes.
I don't know how to
