Running SSH on a different port
HI All,
With my new firewall in place, it has opened my eyes to how much
traffic gets blocked in a single day and also what are the most active
rules. I get *a lot* of requests for port 22.
How does one switch ssh ports? What is a good port to use? What
ramifications does it have when I need to ssh in? Is it as simple as
ssh user at hots:port?

Ramifications of Multiple Sip Reloads Within Minutes?
We have the ability to create random UID's on own system through a custom
CGI API. These UID's are written to individual sip configuration files based
on the account name, so for instance sip_TEST.conf, sip_TEST2.conf, and
sip_TEST3.conf, etc. Many of these UID's are created on the fly and at random
times throughout the day. Right now, I have it setup to do a reload every
night.

RE: OT (a little): IPV6 Ramifications Article
Hi guys,
I know it's a little off topic but......Wondering if you can help.
My wife has been asked to find a writer to produce a story on "The
dramatic ramifications of IPV6 on commercial businesses and how it will
change the product designs for ordinary household/commercial use in a
5-10 year time frame"
So her company hired someone who should have been able to deliver the
goods (ex magazine editor - maybe a little too 'ex'....)
He has com...

News for OS X Users
Sorry things have gone silent on the release front, but I have some good
news: I''ve gotten wxruby-swig to build as a OS X framework. This has a
couple of ramifications
1) wxruby for the Mac will finally exactly like its Linux and PC
counterparts, menu bar and all.
2) Bundling wxruby applications becomes a lot easier.
3) The next binary installer should be able to support darwinports,
fink, and all of the other various rubies for Mac OS X.
I''m going t...

MOH Server
...n would be to offload processing off the asterisk box, onto another system.
The wiki is a bit light on details. If anyone managed to get it up and working, what software did you use on the server side, and what client app did you use? Mpg123? Mpg321? Madplayer? Something else?
Also, putting legal ramifications aside, it'd be nifty to do something similar and stream the audio from an online radio station... just for kicks.
Thanks.

Encrypted File Storage
...CentOS box? This directory contains many scripts
and output files, I need it backed up but not unencrypted and don't want
to store it in a tar file type archive as when it needs to be accessed and
have scripts executed/data generated, it needs to be untarred/unencrypted and
I don't know the ramifications of this wrt recovery once its retarred and deleted.
I was hoping it could be stored somehow such that it was decrypted on the fly when
needed by entering a pass/keyphrase before use.
Thus it could be backed up and remain encrypted. Is dm-crypt the simplest option
here?
None of our servers have a...

cron clarification
What is the ramifications to simply placing scripts in the /etc/cron.hourly directory as opposed to actually adding jobs via the crontab -e method?
Is there any significance to using one method versus the other?
Thanks!

samba-tool dbcheck produces wrong instancetype errors
...Domain
Controllers,DC=inview,DC=local
This happens for 644 out of 655 of the objects in directory. I have
attempted to fix one or two less important objects and the error does
not appear again.
Before I go ahead and fix them all, I want to find out whether doing
this would have any unwanted ramifications?
Can anyone explain what causes these errors and if fixing them might
break something?
Thanks in advance

Asterisk asterisk => statement
...gt; statement sells the Asterisk box to resolve (aka lookup)
extensions by querying the remote Asterisk server defined in the switch
=> statement. The switch => statement is used to centralize dialplans.
I've not used the switch => statement yet, I'm just trying to understand
the ramifications of using it before I try it and blow up my dial plan.
Here's an example of a sample setup
Asterisk Server ast-1
switch => IAX/bobdobbs@ast-2
Asterisk Server ast-2
exten => 12010,1,Dial(Zap/1)
If I'm on a device connected to ast-1 and I dial 12010 I assume ast-1
asks ast-2 to r...

dovecot ssl error message from my own connections
...fine, and
I feel secure with my setup.
But, I get this error message pretty much throughout the day/night,
which appears to come from my own mail clients (desktop or mobile).
I would like to resolve it, because it must me something (that is not
good--that I may not understand), that may have other ramifications.
So, here it is.
date time myserver dovecot: imap-login: Debug: SSL error: SSL_read()
syscall failed: Connection reset by peer
Anyone have a suggestion of what this might hint to, other than obvious
SSL. I tried parsing through various logs, but the most I find is just
this single line.
I can...

"lanman auth" question
Hi All,
Server:
Fedora 26

I set all five of my customer XP workstations to
Send NTLMv2 response only\\refuse LM and NTLM

lanman auth = yes
ntlm auth = yes
And had to turn it right back on as the customer's

requires it

Replacing Skype with Asterisk Peering Servers - and Security
...t call conferencing between
multiple users. Linux support is desirable but not a mandatory
requirement. It will help me run the same phone with Linux Emulation
on my OpenBSD Desktop.
3)
Is it possible to do video conferencing with Asterisk?
4)
This is a very important one.
What are the security ramifications of peering two Asterisk servers on
remote locations and sending the VOIP traffice through the internet
using IAX2 ? Can this traffic be sniffed and the Voice be captured and
heard by any third party?
If so is ther a way to prevent it? Is there a way in asterisk to do
that or should i be using some...

[LLVMdev] Proposal: intp type
...re
represented this way, and in IR a lot more would be represented this
way if such a type existed.
Also, having this type present will tend over time to reduce the
number of casts to/from int64 appearing in bitcode that have to be
stripped out, slightly speeding up optimizations and codegen.
The ramifications that I see:
1. Conversions to/from other integer types: right now, integer type
conversions are always explicity specified as either a trunc, a sext,
or a zext. Since the size of intp is not known at IR generation time,
you can't know whether a conversion to/from intp truncates or extends.

[LLVMdev] possible bug in COFFObjectFile::getSymbolType()
...f (Characteristics & COFF::IMAGE_SCN_MEM_READ &&
~Characteristics & COFF::IMAGE_SCN_MEM_WRITE &&
~Characteristics & COFF::IMAGE_SCN_MEM_EXECUTE) // Read only, not
execute.
Result = SymbolRef::ST_Data;
I'm not very familiar with COFF; what ramifications would this change have?

Shorewall backup configuration patch/hack
...(more like a hack) to shorewall that backups a
configuration after succesfully (re)starting it. In case a future
(re)start fails it will use this backup configuration. (instead of
stopping the firewall and generating a massive ammount phonecalls ;)
I didn''t pay too much attention to the ramifications of this patch, so let
me know if i screwed anything up. It seems to work well with our Webmin
administrator interface.

Domain Member Server (wheezy) - Unable to edit permissions of share without usermapping - shall I add to Wiki?
...aware of?
Second, setting permissions on a share did not work until I mapped the
domain administrator to root. This is mentioned in the Troubleshooting
member server wiki page, but only in relation to granting the
SeDiskOperatorPrivilege, which was not an issue for me.
Does this mapping have any ramifications that I (or others) should be aware
of?
The other way to allow ACL changes from windows (which I did on my
now-defunct member File Servers) was something like this:
"sudo chmod 0775 /srv/myshare" and
"sudo chgrp 'Domain Admins' /srv/myshare"
.. which as result will giv...

Proxy-ARP on Same Segment
I have had to replace an existing setup which has a bunch of IPs
Proxy-NAT''ed onto the loc segment. While I do eventually want to move
them to their own segment, I have to deal with this for the next few weeks.
My problem is that from a loc system I can ping the public IP of a
system being proxy-ARP''d but I can''t hit it via HTTP. Nothing is being
blocked according
